I am a stickler for correct pronunciation. Luckily DH is learning and if we are out at a restaurant he will attempt to say it correctly when he is ordering. The waiters always correct him (bless). His father is a moron and whereever you go he will order his meal by saying "I'll have number 41" or whatever.

You don't have to be spanish, its just nice to actually pronounce a word correctly rather than making up your own. Once someone knows how to pronounce something correctly i get annoyed when they just don't bother.

tara, that's probably a speech impediment!
4/9/08 14:18
lol, lad at work says howible as opposed to horrible!
4/9/08 14:17
argh I see, but personally I'm not spanish so think i'll stick to jalapenos lol, I'll see how I feel at the time :-)

DH used to pronounce quite a few things wrong. And i sometimes hear it when i go around the supermarkets and soo want to correct people. Like Tortillas and him pronouncing the L like an L rather than a Y. grrr.

the J is pronounced as a H same as Fajitas
oooh get me (some one who cant even pronounce ornament properly - i always seem to add a D
)4/9/08 14:15
In spanish the J is prnounced as an H

I think I pronounce most things correctly, but i'm the same as Giraffe, I say fill-et, not fill-ay. Somehow if we're having fish in breadcrumb for instance, it just sounds really pretentious to say 'oh we're having fill-ay of fish tonight'

I can remember in mcdonads a couple of years ago, I asked for a fillet of fish burger and the girl behind the counter give me an absolute withering look and said 'oh you mean a fill-ay of fish', really highlighting the 'ay' lmfao. It's Mcdonalds not the sodding Ivy and I didn't expect to have my pronounciation corrected there!

Hate ordering pizza as df always has jalapenos! How is that pronounced, I always say j a l a p e n o s but they always repeat back to me saying halapenos??? So confused lol

My MIL calls a chicken "chickyyyyn" & it really annoys me.

I do if I know how its pronounced, otherwise I just try my best. I do however say fillet with a t and not fillay. But I know my sushi from my sashimi.

I do unless im mucking around with the kids and the bolognaise becomes bogonaise or i even call it spag bol for short.
Mashed potato becomes smashed pots ect

what a daft debate
my ex calls them Fa-gee-tas but he's a twonk and doesn't count

4/9/08 13:49
I asked as last night a lady was talking to her DH about fadgettas (thats how she pronounced it) and it inwardly made me smile (not out loud though, cos that's rude
so i thought I'd ask

4/9/08 13:47
Lol my OH calls jalepeonoes (sp) ja -op -a -nos
Drives me loony, also says things like ironical and chimoose instead of chimera
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
4/9/08 13:45
Do I call things by their correctly pronounced names?
Why wouldn't I?
4/9/08 13:44
its a faheeta!
i had a housemate once who pronounced Bolognese as you spell it, so Bol-og-nessy. i wanted to beat her with a brick.
4/9/08 13:43
Do you properly pronounce the names of certain foods, or call it however you want to pronounce it (if that makes sense)
for instance (excuse the phonetics)
nice or neece biscuits
fajita or fa-heta
uhhh thats all I can think of at the moment, hmmmm I think this brainwave is already falling a bit flat lol

lol no it's not, we are quite good friends and it isn't, he can say everything else, just chooses to say it this way I guess.
And Sage i'm messing, now I know I will actually use the correct terminology, won't feel silly either knowing that I am pronouncing it correctly.
