Smear test- borderline changes

hun, I had boarderline changes for 10 years! Smear every year, coloposcopy (sp?) every year and they would hum and haw over me and say, well, it hasn't got any worse but we would have expected it to get better by now! By the end of it, they were threatening to do the laser surgery as it had gone on for so long but they decided my cervix was 'short' and as I hadn't had children, they would hang on (laser surgery would have made it shorter as they scrape a layer off - the cervix streches in pregnancy and short ones obviously don't have the same stretch as a long one so are often a 'cause' of late miscarriage/premature birth).
Anyway, way tmi for you there! Then I had a baby and the problem has gone away. Finally! Nothing to worry yourself about. They will keep an eye on it - this is exactly why you go for smear tests!

TTH i had this with my first ever smear at 21! Showed abnormal cells and had to go back 6 mths later. Anyway i went back, and next letter said not enough taken or something for accurate result, so back again, same thing happened, back again, same thing happened, i was so peed off as this went on for over a year with the wait time each time and if something had been wrong i dread to think what may have happened. So then i went private and got the all clear in 3 wks. So mine obviously went back on their own. However i have a friend who always seems to have abnormal cells so goes every 6 mths. Im due to go now, just over 3 yrs, need to make an app tomorrow just waiting for my period so know when the 10-16 day window is, and am def going private again after all the fuss, its worth the 60 quid imo, quicker results, double checked, and less likely to be recalled for insufficient cell result as the stuff they store it in keeps it in better condition. I wouldnt worry if its a 6 mth recall, if it was serious they'd have u in hosp straight away for a closer look a coloscopy thing, Good luck.

Borderline changes can go back to normal on their own sometimes, if they don't at your next smear then the cells will probably be removed by laser (painless)
The changes are categorised as Cin1 Cin2 and Cin3, borderline changes are Cin1.
I know this as four weeks ago, I got a phonecall saying I had abnormal cells and had to have them removed that afternon, they were Cin3.
It really is nothing to worry about, very often they will have gone away by your next smear (usually 6 months away). Hope you are ok.

I had a smear 2 weeks ago.... got another 8 weeks to wait for results.... FFS 10 response time is insane!

Yeah they are probably erring on the side of caution and im being a dame again lol. Just wondering if anyone had experienced similar.

the one time she is needed on debates she is awol!
if it says 6 months id of thought it was ok
7/10/08 22:54
It says about waiting six months to give the cells a chance to get back to normal if they are going to.
WHERE IS Gemma lol.
7/10/08 22:45
if they havent asked fo you to go in asap then id guess that its not 'serious' iygiwm
gemma is the person to ask!

Just says about a repeat one and they will be in touch nearer the time. Never really thought about this before tbh- its quite an eye opener.
7/10/08 22:31
what does the letter say? do you have to do anything next?
it might mean nothing as borderline changes could mean a slight change iygiwm
go and ask to speak to a gp or nurse!

might be something to do with the new hpv thing.my neighbour had a smear done and was referred to hospital. the hospital told her that because of this new hpv screening they are calling people in to be on the safe side. chances are you are in the very lowest bracket like my neighbour was, the hospital even told her that they couldnt understand why she was referred.

oooh not had that letter.... I don't think I'm due a smear for 2 years though, I THINK I had one just after Huwi was born.

Anyone had this? Is it anything to be worried about? Just got back from work to find the letter.

I have had this recently. I had a smear test in feb and the results came back saying mild changes (mild dyskaryosis). My nurse did phone me before i got the letter saying not to worry tho. I have just had my repeat smear and received the letter and everything is now fine. Had to wait a bit longer for repeat as had to be past 12 weeks of pregnancy. I do have to go for another in a years time rather than 3 years.
During the first smear the nurse did explain i have something called an ectropion (sounds like some sort of insect!). Its where the cells normally found on the inside of the cervix are found on the outside. The nurse irritated it and it bled but nothing major. I think this could have affected my results first time. I also bled a little during the second one but again nothing to worry about.
You should speak to your nurse/doc and ask for advice but dont worry about it. I did but we have a history of cancer in the family and i worry too much about nothing!
