It depends on the age of the child, the severety (sp?) of the childs condition, whether the child is certified special needs etc etc. In a preschool child there are no rules as such (apart from the normal ratios) and you have to jump through hoops to get the funding for 1-1 care if the child needs it.

In the SEN school I did work experience in it certainly wasn't 1-1.... only the children with severe difficulties had 1-1... however, I THINK that had some of the children at the SEN school gone to mainstream school they would have had to have 1-1... so its not just about the child's needs, but the school that they attend that defines the ratio. x

I agree with Nac.
It depends entirely on the individual needs of the special needs children. Some children need 1 to 1 care and others it can be 1 to 2 or 1 to 3 etc.

Surely it depends on the nature of the special need? Children usually have it in their statement if they have a 1-1, or what percentage of time they have a 1-1 for.

Ive just started a child care course and was asked to find out about adult to child ratio for the different age groups and settings.
Ive found out most of what i needed but i cant seem to find out about the ratio for children with special needs.
Ive googled it and tried the ofsted site, so im either looking for or typing the wrong thing, if anyone can help id be really greatfull

my ds2 has a full time 1>1 in a preschool nursery placement, because of this his nursery which is normally only allowed a 26 pupils to the 2 adult ratio are allowed to have him as a extra so they have 27 kids in this year, on his statement it is called a adequate level of adult supervision'
on the other hand ds'1 has a statement that reads that he is better suited to small group teaching in his special school in the early years it was 5 or 6 children to 2 adults (key stage 1) he has now moved to 10 children >. 2 adults (key stage 2)
