it is recommended that you should take your folic acid with food...so it probably helps...but remember that feeling and being sick is part of pregnancy.
also, if you throw up after taking a supliment, dont think none of it gets into your system, youl be suprised how quickly it is absorbed...thats what my gp says anyway.

I too take 5mg of Folic acid due to a history of NTD's. As said by other poster...I would rather feel sick and have a healthy baby, then have to go through losing a baby to NTD's.
I take mine 5 mins after food...it seems to keep the sickness at bay for me doing it that way. I also eat Ginger Biscuits which help with the sickness too.

I take a prescription level folic acid (5mg)... I'm starting to wonder if that's why I'm feeling so
... that's like over 10 x the usual dose over the counter!15/8/08 14:21
makes me sick-as. so i stopped. i have eaten brocolli every other day (as part of a meal!!!) and had a bowl of cereal morning and evening cos that contains it too. I figured, suppliments are great, but if theres a way of getting it in me without throwing it back up, this must be better and must leave mroe in my system?!

I take mine at night now, just before bed.i find thats the only time i can take them without feeling groggy.15/8/08 12:00
i have to take 5 mg of folic acid which is 5 times the normal dose) because ive had a baby with a neural tube defect........and im as sick as a dog on them!
unfortunatly it is really important i take them, as i understand the importance of what they do.
but id rather be throwing my guts up all day for nine months and have a healthy baby, than not.
so, stick with them, i know its tough, but having a stillborn bubba with half a head is a lot tougher...sorry to be blunt, but what im trying to say, is they are so important for your babies development, so please please take them, i wouldnt want anyone here to suffer what i have in the past.

I think I might try it after dinner. This pregnancy is so much worse than my other 2, I have also been finding if I eat lunch then I can't eat dinner as I am to full up so I have been having carrot sticks for lunch and then half of what I normally eat at dinner.

I take m ine after dinner only now as i was feeling so sick if i took them anytime. I still feel ropey in the mornings but heyhoo i cant have everything.

have you tried taking it straight after a meal? my tablets say to take on a full stomach.

Hi hun, it does make me feel sick when I take it but I don't actually be sick. Have you tried taking it before bed or some other time of the day? It doesn't matter when you take it, as long as you do. But on the other hand, if you are throwing up after you take it then you're probably not getting it anyway! And therefor it might be worth not taking it?!
Hope you ar feeling btter soon xxx

I haven't taken my folic acid for a few days as it makes me feel really sick, so I thought thia morning that I wouldt ake it as soon as I go up and then eat a couple of hours later. So I took it a within 5 minutes I was being sick!! I was never had problems taking folic acid in my other 2 pregnancys but this is ridiculous everytime I take it I am sick. Has anyone else been like this?

i'd talk to your mw first but you should be able to get the same amount in your diet if you're careful.food with folic acid include sprouts, broccoli, fresh beetroot, satsumas and hazelnuts.if you've still got your 'your pregnancy' mag (off the mw) look on page 9
