Wow, this topic should be in debates! lol! But really though, for whatever reason thy ar doing it, it seems ridiculous to me. I mean our babies are patients the same as us but they are required to provide us with food, why not our babies?????? I really wanted to breast feed ds but just couldn't do it. Should he have had to wait til I could get someone to go to th shops? I didn't have to wait for my food?! I have no problem taking my own formula to hospital, I am afterall responsible for the well being of my baby. But why should they feed a mother, no questions asked and not provide food for the baby? Ok, I've said enough...going off on a bit of a rant now! That's my opinion anyway.

I am planning on breastfeeding again however i dont think £10/15 for a easy to use pack is expensive........i would defo buy ready mades in disposable bottles if i was planning to bottle feed so much more convient than messing about sterilizing......i wanna be chilling in hospital not washing up!

BigWig, they cost about £10plus for about 15 bottes.. IMO it works out far too expensive.. Im not sure some packs are £14.99, we saw them the other day in Asda and remembered that Jordan (Katie Price) used these when her Junior was born.. Within that £15, you can get a small tub of formula powder, a mini flask, and, 2 bottles and steri bags..

Or you get get 2 bottles, steribags and about 10 cartons of ready made, your baby wont have that much anyway so will return home with most..

http://www.tesco.com/superstore/xpi/9/xpi62300449.htm £14.80 for that one, only 12 bottles!!!

    Lindam 3 Microwave Steriliser Bags

If you search for the above on tesco groceries, it will come up, it is £3.15 for a pack of 3 and each bag be used up to 20times... Perfect for when you are away from the home, like hospital and staying with family etc...

I've just read a thread in the general pregnancy section saying that you can now buy starter packs of some formula brands.  Little bottles, ready to use, with pre made formula and the teat, the same as they use in hospital.  More expensive than the tins of powder but easier while in hospital.

Thought I'd mention it as I didn't know you could buy them.

I dont think they are forcing breastfeeding onto anyone.. If they were, they would say they wont provide formula and they wont allow mothers to bring it in either.. I guess its the amount of pressure on the NHS, so many new forms of treatment is made available on it now, so they have to give up some of the little luxaries they provide, such as formula milk etc.. Luxaries shouldnt be taken for granted and no-one will stop a mother bringing in her bottles and readymade milk.. Iv known people to use the lindam steribags.. Must say, they are brill, take up tiny space and keep your babies bottles clean.. I think they have them in Tesco.. I breastfed both mine, with my ds, being a 1st time mum, i was just thinking breastfeeding wouldnt work for me so took steribags, readymade and 2bottles.. Good luck to you all, and to the post before mine, good luck with the breastfeeding, its the best feeling ever, im sure u already know..

I have no problems with taking my own milk in for baby incase I dont get to breast feed but how are you suppose to sterilise baby's bottles?

I didn't know about this.  I told my midwife I was going to bottle feed again and she never mentioned that things had changed.  I wasn't told to take anything to feed ds when I had him as the hospital provided it.

How are you supposed to go make bottles up in hospital when you can't leave your baby?  Or are you supposed to take the ready made cartons & steri bottles?

I certainly have no problem providing my own formula at all, but I do object to what feels like hospitals forcing mothers to take the breastfeeding route, or not at all! I've bottlefed both of my children and plan to do the same with this baby. This is a personal choice of mine and I'd hate to feel like I was not doing the best for my child, by the breastfeeding nazis!!!

To be honest i find the whole expecting the hospital to provide milk is silly.. Surely you all know that when you have a baby, the baby will need milk.. I dont understand why mothers think milk should be free.. The NHS provides alot already.. Its not an added stress for a mothes as a mother knows babies drink.. When doing up a hospital bag, we provide all the bits we need for our baby, so why does this exclude Milk? It cost less than a pack of vest, newborns hardly drink much, take about £3 worth of cartons, should be enough.. All hospitals that dont provide formula, provide a kettle for mothers to use, so you can sterilise and make up feeds if you get the powder milk.. They also have fridges to store unused ready made milk... Where we live they have milk for emergencies, they have nappies too, sanitary towels, the lot.. Imo its the parents duty..

I have to admit that I think that it's fair enough for the hospitals to do this.  If you are planning on bottle feeding, then aren't you advised to take what you need in with you already?

Oh that is awful.... New mothers have enuff to worry about without the added pressure of having to take in formula milk and making bottles in the hospital - i dont agree with this at all.....

    outrageous!

Gate crashing from due in April, but I was told that at my booking in appt. It was the same when I had my dd aswell. The MW did tell me they have some for emergancies though, but wouldnt provide for women who just wanted to bottle feed.

    I have a questionTillyann79

My best friend who is due to give birth very soon, recieved a letter from her clinic informing her that hospitals no longer (from 1st sept) will be providing formula milk to healthy babies and mothers. Has anyone else heard about this? I haven't been told yet, maybe because I'm only 12 weeks but apparently it will be a nationwide thing. Is this a ploy to get you to breast feed or is it because they don't want to influence your choice of brand? You can take your own cartons in with permission.
