You should get tested at 35-37 weeks. Take a look at the below website - Group B Strep Support www.gbss.org.uk/ it has all the info you will need xxx

thats what worried me initially...the lack of routine testing, and the innacuracy of the tests, only 50% accuracy which is crap. i will be getting tested now, i have decided. anyone know when is the best stage in pregnancy to be tested? xx

Hi, I had Group B Strep when I gave birth last Nov. Am pregnant again so will have it this time too. I found out at 31 wks just by fluke as I had a routine swab due to going into hosp with strong braxton hicks. I got the antibitoics during my labour and my baby was fine. It was a worry though and I had to keep pestering the midwives during my labour to give me the antibiotics cos they need, if I remember right, to be given 4 hours before birth. x

I have been doing more research! After my sister had Group B strep she went on a one woman crusade to inform everyone about Group B strep...I fear I have taken over from her!
Doctors and midwives won't automatically promote info about Group B Strep as the government says there is no evidence of any effects to babies....Many mums will disagree! It is therefore up to you to ask your midwife about it, and they should then give you the relevant info.
Group B strep needs to be tested for later on in pregnancy at about 37 weeks, you can be tested earlier but you may get a false negative result. You can order the test online - Deeja has posted a link - or your midwife can tell you how to get hold of it.
If you do have Group B Strep you should have two doses of antibiotics when you go into labour, often though there is not enough time! If you don't have these then your baby can be treated with antibiotics once they are born.
It is so important to know the facts about Group B strep as it can have serious effects to your baby.
Please, please get the test and tell everyone you know about it too!
Sorry for the essay! xxx

If you aren't given antibiotics before the birth, the baby can be given them afterwards. My sister wasn't given the antibiotics, I think because she had a c section and it wasn't thought necessary. But after Mia was born, she showed the some of the same symtoms as Thomas (first baby who had GroupB strep) mainly an eye infection, so the doctors did some tests. My sister didn't want to wait for the results so insisted Mia had the antibiotics anyway, which the doctors gave her. Turned out she wasn't infected by Group B Strep. Untreated GroupB Strep wasn't too serious for Thomas but it can be. Another friend didn't have the test and her baby died of Group B strep. So please everyone ask their MW for the test even if you have to pay for it. xxxx

You have to be tested late on in pregnancy - from about 35-37 wks. Have a look at this link where you can buy a test http://www.homehealth-uk.com/medical/strepbtest.html I was always worried that I may be a carrier. (dont know why just had a feeling). When my mw visited me at 39 wks she did a routine urine sample and saw a tiny spec of blood in it - I couldnt see it, but she wanted to double check it wasnt a sign of strep b. Within a couple of days my results came back that I was a carrier. When I went into labour the following wk and had had a show, we were told to go straight to the maternity unit. They immediately they put me on an antibiotic drip. It worries me that they dont test for it in the UK and god only knows the consequences if it wasnt picked up. Someone I know wasnt aware she had it, and her little baby died soon after birth. My sister is din and she asked her mw for a test, she wasnt overjoyed to do it (must be because of cost) but I dont think they can refuse you if you ask. If not then buy the test on line.

hi emma i have group b strep it was detected after i had some vaginal swabs done after a bleed. I think the fact that women have to pay for it other wise is an absolute disgrace especially with the conciquences it comes with if it is passed on to your baby in labour. now i had strep b in my last pg and had an alert note in my notes to say that i needed iv antibiotics in labour now the doc made a big boo boo and i didnt get my antibiotics now whether its a coincidence or not my son was struck down with menengitis at 3 mths with septacaemia and we nearly lost him he is perfectly healthy now thank god, now my mum is a nurse and she told me and the doc told me at the hospital that the reason my son was ill is prob because i didnt have the antibiotics i should have had during labour.. needless to say i aint letting it drop as there neglect nearly cost my son his life xx

i had this. Didn't know until we were about to leave the hospital with our new daughter! They told us we had to stay another 24 hrs cos she had to be monitored incase it had been passed onto her. Was beside myself with worry, anger and upset. Didn't get told anything about it! They should of given me antibiotics in labour. So i strongly advise people to get tested. Can be so harmful to bubs. Thank GOD, my darling was ok. -

ok, so heres another question...i seem to be one of the few women who have never had thrush, what are the symptoms exactly? i am aware itching is one but are there more? thanks girls,no idea why this is worrying me so much. I have decided to have the test tho, even maybe the advanced one x

I have been a carrier during the last 2 pregnancies. I have had tests during to re-current thrush in pregnancy. I have been miffed as i havnt had antibiotics during both labours. Both were induced labour. Thing is both labours were virtually inexistent. My 2nd child they tld me i was just getting induction pain. My son was born a hour later. my daughter was then classed as a failed induction and on my rest day she popped out in to my knickers. Both times no concerns were shown as a result of not had the antibiotics and both babies are fine. but this time i will be checking up on why i had never been given antibiotics or the babies checked.

im a carrier, i dont get infected but carry it and could infect my baby. I found out in first pregnancy when i kept having ''thrush'', they did a swab and found i had, they let me know i could only have the anti biotics during labour thus once i knew i was in labour i had to go in immediately. So even in the next preg, i dint even bother getting tested as i know im a carrier i just told mid wife who instructed me to do the same, come in once i knew i wa sin labour and they gave me the drugs. Will obviously be doing that again in this pregnancy! good luck

Hello! My sister had strepB and passed an infection to her baby, which was treated by antibiotics. I will definately be paying for the test and would recommend to everyone they do to. My sister feels very strongly about the test and tells everyone she knows to have it. xx Louise 8 weeks

I have one dd but to my knowledge don't have it. I have no idea why but it is really worrying me. for those of you who have it, or had it, at what point did you realise you had it, and why?I am wondering whether to pay to have a private test done which are much more accurate than a doctors test. em x
