Hiya.. I looked into this... I live with OH and we privately rent a 2 bed house and we are on very small wages so when I drop down to maternity leave it won't cover the rent alone.

Give the housing office a call and tell them ur situation (call up the tax credits office first and get them to give u an estimate of what you will be entitled to when on maternity leave because the housing office told me to find that out first before they could help me) they will be able to tell you if they will be able to help you from what type of house you are in and how much income you have.

I am only entitled to £30 a month help with the rent but hey - everything helps.  Also ask them about council tax benefit too

thank you for all your advice. yes i think it is prob best if i go down to the local office, trying to find anything out on the phone is a nightmare. unless you find out what you're entitled to and push for it, no one seems to offer that kind of advice, but luckily i have lots of helpful ladies on here. thanks again xx

Erm not to sure on this but I would have thought you'd quallify for some kind of housing benefit, possibly council tax benefit also the tax credits and maybe some income support??Maybe you could visit your job centre with your earnings details and they could help some more...

you should be able to claim housing benefit, if you go on to your local council website they should have a calculator on there which will give you an indication as to how much you will get. id go to your local office as well as it can take a while for them to sort it out sometimes xx

have you looked into housing benefit or local housing allowance?  i'm sure you would entitled to it and they help pay all or some of your rent plus your council tax.  if you google housing benefit and whatever area you live in then it should come up with something or contact your local council and they will tell you what you need to do x

i'm currently working full time but i'm going to have about 6 months off when my baby comes along. i'm privately renting a 1 bed flat at the minute and have put my name on the housing list months ago but have heard nothing from them. i won't be able to afford the rent when i'm only getting Maternity pay from work. anyone got any advice on what i need to do? i don't live with the babys dad bt know he will support me a bit money wise but wondered what else i can do. xx
