I was offered one due to my mum being diabetic - they did the glucose challenge test first, which showed a slightly raised amount, so had to have the full GTT test - had convinced myself I had it - but results came back 'perfectly normal' - was great news. Better to have the test and be told its fine - OR to have it and if it shows a problem, surely its best to know about it?

I was on insulin for my diabetes. The baby can also end up being sugar dependant (diabetic)

I have a high BMI and at my booking in scan I was booked in for 3 growths scans at 28, 32 +36 weeks I assume because of my high BMI. I have asked midwife about GTT test as I thought I would be getting one, but she says unless they see a need, they don't do it routinely. Measured just above average at 1st growth scan last week and there has been no sugar in my urine, so I hope I am fine, but a lot can happen in 4 weeks, but I don't know if by 32 weeks it will be to late to take test? x

They should also offer it if anyone in immediate family (siblings, parents & grandparents) has diabetes. I had mine because my nan developed diabetes later in life not because my bmi was high because it isn't, sugar in urine becasue I have none or because bubs is measuring big, even though bubs is measuring big as wasn't measuring big until after I had my gtt.

They offer it here if you are measuring too big too. I got booked in for a GTT and a growth scan, had a growth scan and baby was fine so MW cancelled my GTT, said it was un necessary. If you keep your diet healthy, then even if you dont get a test it'll help your baby. If you have GD thats what they normally do, just check your diet. It just means that your bodys hormones are messing with the natural insulin in your body and the break up of sugars is too much for your body and it cant do it properly therefore too much sugar is passing through to your baby so the main thing, even no wive still done it is cut down on sugar. The main effect is normally a bigger baby at birth x All you have to do is ask your MW about it and she will tell you if she feels it'd be advantageous for you xx any blabbed on and dont know why xxx

An article for "the other side," as it were.
Michel Odent is a very respected birth practioner. The article simply states that GD is not a disease, it is a description of a result of a test.
It's an interesting read.

They do it generally if your bmi is considered high, and they do it if you have had a previous 9lb baby. I had mine at 24 weeks and it was normal

I had one coz i've had a previous big baby. My ds was 9lb 2oz at birth, That was 3 weeks ago and heard nothing so must be ok.

They normally do a test if you have 3 lots of sugar in your waters, on 3 consecutive (sp?) occasions.

I was never offered one but my MW says they only offer it here if your BMI is above a certain level (no idea what that level is tho!) or if they pick up sugar in urine. Mine don't offer as standard
6/10/08 19:06
ah thats fine as i wondered why i hadnt been offered it lol the only tests i refused were the spina bifida and downs ones xx
6/10/08 19:04
Lyndsey I don't think we get them unless they pick up sugars in your urine sample.

Had a letter from hospital about mine and got to go in tomorrow. Not looking forward to the glucose drink and the fact that I wont be able to eat till after its done but hey if it helps the babies then I am going to have it. X X

Please . . . not for you for your unborn baby.
I've seen so many posts on here about people refusing it and it really is silly, even if it ends up being a waste of your time, isn't it better to know?
I had gd last time and it didn't develope until 26 weeks. This time round they tested me at 12 weeks and it was clear, but then I had another test at 26 weeks and I had it again .
Please have it done if it is offered to you, if left untreated, it can do all sorts to your unborn baby
