Hi, I've had the mirena twice, it lasts for 5 years so after the first 5 years I had another one fitted. I had it out last year to have a baby (big gap I lnow...lol 10 years) Had it taken out oct 31st and was pregnant by december!!!! I think they are fantastic.... I hardly ever have a period...and when I do it lasts for about a day. The fitting can be uncomfortable but no more than having a smear. as for the strings, you should have them checked, but I used to get them checked when having a smear. You cant feel the strings yourself.

i had the mirena coil for approx 2 years before having it removed to try to conceive.
it made my previously heavy periods much lighter, which was great.
i will be having another one fitted as soon as i can !

has anyone had any nausea with the mirena coil? i'm thinking of getting one because every other hormonal contraceptive makes me so nauseated. i had the depo injection last month and i feel so bad. i'm feeling so sick everyday and headaches as well and constantly hungry. i just can't wait for it to wear off! the pill has the same effect. i am just wondering if much of the hormones from the mirena get into your system. i've had a copper iud and it was ok except i had very heavy periods. don't know what i should do.

thank you for your responses. If I am going to have it it will be at my GPs so hopefully it won't be too painful having it inserted.

I had the merena for 4 years before I was pregnant and had to have the strings cut off cos they kept coming down, it took 3 months to get pregnant after having it removed.
The only issue I had was getting it out which took a lot of attempts due to the stings being cut off.
On the plus side, I did not have a period whilst it was in and no hormonal effects which was great.

I had it fitted 2 months ago.
Did loads of reserch on the net firts to see the pros and cons. And even the worst that could happen would be better than me being pregnant again.
It had it done at the Family Planning Clinic as the Gp couldn't do it. I would definalty ask for a referal to the FPC as they do it all the time and DEFINATLY do a much better job, as they do it pretty much evey day.
It was easy and pain free on inserton, just a little uncomfortable. Well worth it though. I have bery light almost spotting when I am on, which I love. As for the stings unless you are feeling for them, which you should do every month when your period has finished, I never feel them.
If you want to know anymore I will be happy to help.

I'm seriously thinking of having it. It's really small & made of soft plastic. It releases hormones locally rather than in the system, so you don't have the side effects you normally would from taking the pill.
As for the strings, you shouldn't feel them as they're quite high inside you. It was recommended by my doctor and gynae, both of whom I know & trust.

Hi, my 2nd boy is 5 weeks +2 days. I am soon due for 6 week check up and will discuss contraceptive. I was wondering if anyone is using or deciding to have Mirena? What do you think of it? I am not sure about it yet as I don't know much about it apart from what I read on the manufacturing leaflet...... The 2 thin string worries me a bit! Won't it me uncomfortable?

I have tried the Mirena and copper coils. I kept getting infections with the copper coils that by the time i saw a gp who took it out she showed it to me and said if you don't fall pg within 3 - 6 months don't expect to without help. Dh and i gave up after 9 months then within 2 months fell with our 1st dd. I had the Mirena last time and bleed for 3 1/2 weeks out of 4 weeks each month. So bled from when fitted in September i realised i must be pg when i went 3 weeks without a period (in December) thats when i realised that it had gone!! Must have caught on a tampon or something. Now my 2nd dd is nearly 3 weeks old (will be on Wednesday). They suit some people but not every one. Must admit i liked the copper one but the infections weren't good and having questioned my own fertility scared the hell out of me.
