the reason the guidlines changed is because a coupl;e of years ago in germany a baby died of e coli this was then traced back to the baby powder. if you boil your kettle and leave to stand for no longer than 30 mins make up your bottles and cool as quickly as possible and put in fridge and use within 24 hours your hygiene is good ie wash hands when making bottles then there isnt a problem with making feeds in advance. the feeds need to be made at 70 degrees in order to kill any bacteria in powder which is why you dont leave water for more than 30 mins to cool as after that the temperature of water isnt hot enough to kill any bacteria. i make my bottles in advance and have had no probs. xx

I couldnt bf due to health reasons so have been using bottles from around 2 weeks. I sterlise 6 bottles and fill with boiling water. If I am going out I will leave water to cool and take powder seperate. If I am at home  will add formula to boiled water thats been cooled for 15mins, leave on side for a further 10mins or so and put in fridge. I was actually given a book from Midwife at hospital re baby care and its advice was to make up feeds in advance, if it was so dangerous they would not give them books out hun. x

I know, it's silly, thats how i was fed, thats how i've fed other children i've looked after!

I was just checking that you had to cool them before putting them in the fridge!

    Gatecrashing from DIO,

This might be a silly question, but when making 24 hours worth of feeds, do you make them with boiling water, allow them to cool and then put them in the fridge? if not how?

    Thanks

I find this breast is best stuff really upsetting as i have three children and couldnt do it with any of them. i felt like a terrible mother because i couldnt give my los the best start in life!!!!! but came to learn i make up for it in every other aspect so its bottles all the way with me and its individual choice on how you choose to do it!

just more stupid guildlines they decide to change every few years just to look like they are doin something

but i think its down to this "breast is best" stuff just to make new mums think bottle feeding is to much hassel with having to make the feeds when needed.

my mum feed me with bottles made in advance i done it with archie and with lillie so social services take me away now for not following the new rules

if you were to read all the baby books wrote each one says something different

they just want to make our jobs much harder like it aint already

I make bottles of water up in advance and as powder when a feed is required. I know liability is the issue here and companies don't want to say it's ok to make up feeds in advance even if it is 99.9% of the time! I don't know anyone who could make a fresh feed every time without your wee one screaming bloody murder!

    hi

my dd is 19 weeks and i make her bottles once a day for 24 hours and store in the fridge.  i've done this since switching from breast to bottle at 4 weeks and have had no problems with upset tummy or sickness.  i read up on all the advice and reasons why you should make up fresh and made my mind up to make them in advance based on the following:

powdered milk is not sterile so the advice is to only make with water greater then 70 degrees to kill the bacteria.  if you do this and then rapidly cool the bottles and store in a cold fridge bacteria regrowth should be minimal.

i tried making up feeds one at a time with hot water but found the night feeds to be particularly stressful as you have to wait for the water to cool enough (but too much) to make the feed, and then cool if further for lol to drink.  at 3 am i found this much too upsetting and in early days it is not always easy to anticipate a feed and trying to pacify a ravenous baby is hard!!!

my sister had a baby 2 years ago and also made up 24 hours worth at a time (as was the advice at the time) and her child was fine.

i think with everything to do with bringing up a baby is very much down to each mothers individual preference.  it is great to listen to all the correct procedures and professional advice but at the end of the day, bringing up a baby is a tough and challenging time, and you must do what works for you.  good luck with your lo.!!!*** alt="" src="http://my.bounty.com/library/images/forums/discussionforums/icons/smile.gif" />

    Hello,

I make up my bottles once a day and store them in the fridge. I didnt even know thy were advising to make up feeds as you need them until my HV said today.

Im on baby 4 and Ive made up a 24 hour supply for each of them and they're all ok and Ive never had any problems with their milk / feeds.

I think everone to there own .. i personally did at the start now i dont as i found u can get the tommee tippie containers and just add it to the water when needed its really easy to do and id rather have a fresh feed than one thats been sitting for a while even in a fridge as bacteria still can grow inside one.. but everyone has there own way and im sure whatever decision a mother has made for their baby they have really considered both the pros and cons.

i believe t is ok after a lot of debate but when i go on this site there is so many people who are textbook and say no.  i was like that but it is ridiculous that we cant store milk in the fridge.  what did people do years ago!!
