I took my ds camping a few weeks ago and it was virtually freezing at night, I was so worried about him getting cold that I had him in a vest, baby grow, half swaddled him with two thick blankets, put a hat on and used socks for gloves (he did'nt half look a sight!). The next morning I was shocked to see that he had a rash!! My sil was with us (she's a special care nurse for babies) and said it was heat rash and that it's far less dangerous for a baby to get cold than hot, needles to say I did'nt wrap him up quite so warm the next night!!!!

Yeah 18's good i keep heatin tickin over at 18 at night now. But i love them grobags.............wouldn't mind one for myself!!!!! lol xxxx

yes thats right dont go by babies hands or feet feel there back or chest to see how warm they are. use growbags to keep the warmth in x

12 degrees it was in our nursery last night, soon warmed up the longer he was in it though, he was in long sleved gro- grobag and a nice thick blanket on top.
If you feel lo is cold - neck, head and torso NEVER hands or feet then just whack on another blanket.
IF you want to yo can always put a hot water bottle in the cot before lo goes in, just to warm the bed a little

i went away last week and stayed in a caravan and the nights were freezing so my baby had to sleep in a hat as she is bald and was freezing without however it was a small hat that only just reached her ears and fitted her head perfectly so i think if u are sensible and make sure the fits ok it can be used if needed.
i know the guidelines say not too but in certain circumstances it s betther than them bein g cold and unable to sleep but like others say if the rooms the right temperature u shouldnt need hat!

I always thought that 18 degrees is a good temperature for them to sleep in.

u shouldn't put a hat on your lo in bed as they lose unwanted heat through their head.
i use gro bags for this exact reason. 18 degrees is actually a good temp for a nursery. if u look on their thermometers they tell u exactly what to put lo in to sleep comfortably and safely. this is one of those things i don't take a risk on. even if hands seem cold it's their abdomen/tummy u should feel for gauging how warm they are. xx

hiya just thought i'd mentin that if a baby is too cold they will usually let you know as they'd be uncomfortable (as you've found out!) but if they get to hot they might not be able to tell you as they could lose consciousness and die - over heating is a big risk factor for you know what - i know that i'd prefer my little man to be too cold rather than too hot...HTH x x

they say not to put a hat on when in bed cos s/he wriggles it may slide down over the face x
3/10/08 12:59
yeah i wouldn worryt about overheating too much as your baby isold enough now to let you know ifthey are hot but if they feel cold definitly wrap them up!

Hat i havent thought of that one b4. Its really hard isn't it because they say you shouldn't over heat your baby but then you dont want them to freeze. All the do's and dont's its driving me mad lolx

same here. i have been putting my baby to bed with a vest under her babygro and mittens on. then i put her in a gro bag/baby sleeping bag with 2 blankets on top. seems to keep her warm and if it gets really chilly will put a hat on her

i dont know what to do my lo's room is absolutely freezin according to the avent room thermometer we have it is 18c or below all of the windows are closed except for the trickle vents, they dont let much in at all and also the heatin is on. poor lil bubs keeps waking with cold hands and last night she woke crying in hare sleep 3times which is unlike her she soon settled herself but i cant help wondering if its coz its so bloody cold.xxxx

Its defo better being too cold than too hot. My little one often has cold hands even when its warm but when i feel his stomach its always warm. The best temperature for ur los room is between 16 and 20.
