I think what helped us to start with is when we got married we were given 2 thousand pounds in gift money from family.. and we pretty much put that in the bank and used the money in the bank for direct debit for all bills... so i guess that gave us a head start. The other cheat is that i was given bags and bags full of clothes for my daughter for gifts over xmas, birthday and when she was born etc.. so i have hardly bought her any clothes myself just pjamas really lol.

I guess then you can count me out then in the money saving area.. i suppose if it wasnt for the gift money and the clothing then i wouldnt have been able to save as much.

We really do have 7,000 put away since we've come back from our 3 month trip to australia which was end of February.

The only benefit my husband gets (coz i'm not eligible as i'm australian) is the child benefit of (cant remember exactly) £70+ a month?

i did my last big shop at aldi. i was sceptical about the quality but i managed to get about 80% of things there and got the rest online at asda. on a weekly shop i saved £20. everything i tried from aldi has been as good as anywhere else. they have really good fruit and veg deals.

i also go on the website myvouchercodes.co.uk if i'm buying anything online as you can always find a discount code. eg. for free delivery at asda.

I do that too. If something is a real bargain then I buy it no matter what the age! I have up to age 5 in designer clothes in draws upstairs because they were on sale!

I got 400 a week over 6 months being £10,400 for 26 weeks at 400 a week. Leaving 3400 dividing that by 6 leaves about 565 per month to pay rent etc, that wouldn just pay for my car! I think as pp post said must be a typo. Still £700 in 6 months is good going with rent, bills etc etc to pay. I still want saving tips especially being a single mum now!!

ummm was that a typo and you meant £700?     £400pw for 6months is about £9600 so to save £7000 is some going!!  whats your secret???    Blimey, maybe its just me, I thought we were on ok money, get by but havent much left to save, can't afford lots of holidays and everyone else always seems to be going away on hols and things, am I doing something wrong?!   I have £10 a week for myself and thats it (once all bills are paid)

DH and I are well pleased and were just talking about our success in saving our money. £7,000 in 6 months!

Only DH works and I get no benefits coz i'm not entitled to it..., i dont know how it has worked out so well.. but we pay  all the usual bills as everyone else... we pay rent (privately owned flat), parking permits, council tax, water, electricity, gas, internet, phone..

DH gets paid weekly, and it's not  like he gets paid heaps and heaps... around £400 after tax a week...and as soon as he gets paid (cash packet).. he takes out the rent and money for groceries and we put the rest aside...  We have gone the old fashioned way and put our cash in a box hidden away and just add to it whenever we can.

We also changed our loose coins (when we have some change we throw it in a container and we counted it up... £200 +!!! so we changed that to notes and added it to the box.

We went out shopping yesterday and spent £200 for hubby, myself and DD on clothing... but we can because we put the money aside.

I think its a matter of self control, dont overbuy and dont buy so much grocery shopping especially if you're only going to throw it away the next week coz it hasnt been eaten (i have found i used to throw so much out so now i just dont buy it).

This is the first time in my life that i've not struggled fo rmoney or owed money on debts etc. And this is with only one of us working.
