I cant remember feeding my ds2 18 months i think like pp says he had someone else to copy although at times i do wish i had some control over it you know how it is some days they eat great others not so good and on them days i would love to help if i so much as lift his spoon/fork he would scream. He is even at the stage where he wants a big spoon with his breaky.
One area i wish he didnt do quickly29/9/08 21:56
My dd is 15 months and can spoon feed herself. She has done from about 12 months. She just wouldn't let me feed her. I think it's because she always sees her brother feeding himself and wants to copy. Also from when i started weaning i always had to give her a spoon of her own while i fed her with another spoon just to stop her grabbing the one i was feeding her with. She obviously didn't use it as a spoon then, she just shoved it in her mouth with nothing on LOL.

Honestly, they'll do it when they're ready but to encourage them you could leave a spoon on their tray and eat with them so they see yuo eating using a spoon / fork. I did read somewhere that babies don't develop the wrist muscles properly until around 18 months so in most development books you'll see that its aroudn then they expect yuor baby to be able to spoon feed although a lot of babies manage it sooner.
My dd started feeding herself from a spoon the later part of 17 months old.
