I QUALIFIED AS A DENTAL NURSE A DAY AGO WHOOOHOOO XXXX
I brush my sons teeth twice a day, morning and night time and rinse his mouth after lunch. I started when he got two teeth. I let him play with the brush and suck on it, and then I take it and make sure I brush his teeth and gums. I like his teeth to be clean and sometimes he whines about it and sometimes he is fine. He is getting better at accepting that Mummy will get his teeth clean whatever he does so he doesn't seem to protest now.
my dentist told me it is really important that their teeth are brushed properly twice a day even at this age. dd will only chew on the toothbrush, i lie her on my knee and give them a good brush, sometimes she laughs and sometimes she moans, then i give her the toothbrush to do herself.
I still do my sons myself as he just chews on his brush if i left it up to him and I like his teeth to be clean. He does practice in the bath with a spare one though!
I never made a big fuss about it with DS (now 6) in his first year he was not interested at all. After that nursery made a fun time and he got used to it. Now with DD (20 mths) every morning and eveningme and DS go to the bathroom together and she follow us and copy us with her brush even the spiting and the tongue cleaning she is doing it as well.
our dentist told us not to make an issue out of it. unless lo is eating sweets and drinking lots of juice there shouldn't be a problem. dd has a brush that you jsut chew on. i thought that we should be upgrading her but her said a brush in her mouth is the important thing. have you tried just leaving it to your lo? it could just be them stamping independence. dd does her own and now asks for her brush! (we have also started giving her a normal one to practice with in the bath)
My lo sometimes brushes her teeth, other times has a complete paddy when I try to get her to do it or if I try to do it so I just leave it as I don't want it to turn into a battle. Is this right do you think or should I just let her cry? What does anyone else do?

Do you use an electric toothbrush? my two were fascinated by mine so I got them one each with soft bristles and they love them!
They let me brush for a bit then do some themselves, because they're electric they clean much faster than manual so you don't have to clean them for as long
