You have my sympathies Sarah - ds was up at 1130, 130 and 245 last night - am tired! x

God this is so ironic, but my son has just turned back into a complete nightmare at night. I havent had more than 2 hours sleep each night for the last 3 nights.
Big yawn. lol

Sarah, I would say that is why it is not recommended for children under 2 and why a doctor wouldn't prescribe it for a baby who didn't have bad sleep problems under that age. A pharmacist also wont prescribe it for sleep problems, only for travel sickness and allergies in children over 2.
I do think that the 4 out of 7 figure can't be right or they would have withdrawn the product but I understand why you are concerned after losing someone close.

I am the original poster and I wanted to thank those of you who have posted advice or non-insulting opinions. To the poster who mentioned SIDS and Phenergan, scary stuff and sorry to hear you lost a relative to sids (sorry can't remember if u said cousin or not??)
I will give that wake to sleep method a go too, and if it doesn't work then hey ho, it's early starts for me.

No Sarah it doesnt sound like youre any more anxious than I was. It is something to worry about in those early months and I was totally paranoid abotu doing everything to prevent it (not saying kids who passed away to SIDs had parents who did anything but that too). It's always a terrible, terrible, tragedy.
Anyways thanks for the info. My son hardly ever sleeps through but its the way he is - not much going to change him I dont think !!! If nothing else this thread has made me realise that I'm not alone in that sense - soemtimes, often, it seems like everyone else's kids are sleeping 7-7 or longer!

I couldnt see actually, it was a bit of a bummer. I saw it on the start of the website address but when I clicked on it you had to be a member to read any futher, and when I read it before it was about 2.5 years ago, so I honestly cant remember.
Like I said, whether you chose to believe it or not is up to the person (I too did wonder) because there are so many of these studies and alot are contradictory.
However, you cant really get something to contradict this, you cant get a study to "Phenergan helps them sleep AND is good for them!"
So, as far as im concerned, even if the 4 in 7 study is balls (which it might well be, lets be honest) and just 4 in 70 infants died of SIDS because of phenergan, that alone is enough to scare me into not using it.
My cousin died of SIDS, perhaps this is why Im so anxious about it.
Not so much now of course! My son is strapping, but I admit I did worry when he was a baby.

4 in 7 infants out of how many in total Sarah because that seems absurdly high. Also, in these cases, had it been prescribed? Not to be sensationalist about all this but I really am finding this incredibly shocking.

I just googled the phenergan and SIDS link to each other, and there are so many reports to say they have an actual link that I couldnt chose which one to post here!
One report said that 4 in 7 infants that had died of SIDS had been given phenergan (this was the report i read when I was pregnant)
Theres been alot of studies done, I really hope that anyone who plans to use it (or use it again) takes a look at takes it into consideration.

Yes but Inga I'm guessing pharmacists dont ask? I mean I know they ask for medised (sometimes!) and they just ask if its for someone over 2 and people do lie dont they and use it as a sleep aid even on wee ones.x

Can I just add that you can't buy it over the counter if u want to use it on children under 2 or if u want to use it on children as a sleeping aid. No pharmacist will sell u it for that reason as it says on the packet.

Hi again,
I have heard the wake to sleep method works wonders. Also for the OP - how about one of those bunny clocks for your older child and tell them they get up when the light comes on?
Sarah - wow that is scary stuff about SIDS - i didnt realise that. Those poor parents not knowing about it either. In my opinion this stuff should never be sold over the counter (I didnt realise it was) because it is bound to be used incorrectly I would imagine.

"Phenergen is safe if used correctly. You can buy it over the counter at the chemist."
Studies on babies who have been victims of SIDS would beg to differ, Even taken correctly the child can fall into a too deeper sleep, that can lead to SIDS.

Hi ya!!! I just thought I give some advise to the orginal post. I haven't any personal experiences with phenergan but know a little bit about it as I'm in a medical profession.
It contains an antihistamie so is used for allergies or sometimes travel sickness. It causes drowsiness which is why Doctors used to prescribe it to mothers who couldn't settle their children. However this is not practised anymore unless for a very good reason. It is available over the counter. However if you'd tell the pharmacist that you want it to settle your child to sleep they wouldn't sell it to you as you'd need to consult your doctor to give it for that reason. It's also not indicated for children under 2 years, I don't know the reason for this but company's have to put it on the product if the longterm affects are not known with children in this age group. So that could be a reason.
Hope this helps. I'd definately consult the doctor as you don't know what impact it could have on your child. If your child's under 2 I wouldn't use it at all.

Can I ask why you chose not to use something safer and better known to us, such as medised?
23/9/08 11:55
Sarah23fly yeah it did worry me thats why she only had a couple of times, I agree that it is not a great solution but I was ill myself. I agree with prev poster that munchkin should try the wake to sleep or controlled crying methods. I did the controlled crying and it has worked she sleeps much better.
23/9/08 11:11
Munchkinbump, I would advise you speak with your doctor if you are finding it hard to cope from lack of sleep. I don't think she would recommend Phenergen for this because by the morning it would no doubt have worn off but maybe she could refer you to a baby sleep clinic for recommendations on how to get you baby to sleep longer if you feel you need that.
Someone earlier suggested the wake to sleep method. This is a Baby Whisperer technique, it means you having to get up even earlier for a few days if you can bear it but it should work in the long run. You go into your child 1 hour before she normally wakes and move her slightly, tuck her in, stroke her hair etc until she stirs as if she is going to wake. Then you leave the room and let her go back into a deep sleep, this way you have disturbed her normal sleep pattern and hopefully she should sleep a bit longer. It sounds crazy but it does work.Good luck

I didnt even know there was such thing. Im a single mum and while i was pregnant my dd had a thing about getting up about 3/4 times a night and would not go back to sleep i was extremely tierd as she only slep for 4 hours, she still wakes up early or night wakes and i also get up with my nearly 3 month old too. Its all part of being a parent but its so hard. But i do know a lady who used something on her daughter (might be what your talking about) because she would only sleep for 2 hours a night and she had 3 other children to look after. xxx

I gave in to exhaustion and put him in my bed, undoing months of hardwork getting him to sleep through in his own bed.
Bah!!!!
