My dd is 19mths and we put her into a single bed Sunday night.  She does get up but we just take her back, without talking, and put her into bed and after a few of these she does go back to sleep.  Sometines it takes two returns other times it takes 20! But its worth it and eventually they will get the idea!  Dont give up though if you do start!

ds is 20mths and we converted his cot into a bed about 3weeks ago, (purely as he was starting to try and climb out of his cot and we wanted to save any accidents before they happen)

he hasnt been to bad with it at all, he has a single duvet and pillow and apart from getting out a few times hes ok, we started off by putting him back everytime he got out but found that made it worse so we just leave him now he soon gets bored when he realises hes getting no attention, we put his cotbed duvet on the floor folded up along side the bed so if he does fall out its a softer landing.  THB he'll fall asleep sometimes on the duvet whuch is is on the floor and he loves it, so we just leave him 20mins or so after he's fallen asleep and go put him in the bed and he stays there till the morning.

My ds is 17 months tomorrow and has been in his cotbed for a nearly 2 weeks now. He was always getting his arms and legs(can get out of the sleeping bag!) stuck and was waking himself up. He has a guard on one side and te wall on the other. We have had no problems with him and he is actually sleeping better. We were actually away for a wedding last weekend and we put him in his travel cot - he managed to climb out of it and hated being in it. It worked for us moving him early as i thought he'd be 2+ before we converted it from the cot. I suppose you can try it and see how you get on.

dd is 16 months, dont want to rush her and convert her cot bed just yet but when she stands she tried getting her leg up over the bar, the base is on the lowest setting, i doubt she will sleep when i take the sides off! wish she had a toy room then would just have her bed in bedroom AND THATS IT! lol

My dd is 18 months and I took the sides off on Friday night, she was absolutely fine.

But let me tell you the whole story

3 months ago, I decided to take 1 side off to test her out for daytime naps only. The first nap was fine, the second nap that day she didn't go to sleep, just played and played. The side went back on at bedtime as planned. Did the same again the following 2 months and mostly the same happened again, 1 nap was perfect, the second was a bit of a nuisance.

Development wise lately she's started climbing everything - although not tried climbing out of her cot as far as I know. She understands when it's nap time, I see her signs and ask her if she wants a nap - if she doesn't then she runs away from me, if she does want to nap then she'll go to the stairs - or if we're upstairs already then she'll go to her cot. We just decided that the time was right for her, she also sleeps all over the place but I thought that at some point all kids realise that they need to sleep in a particular place.

So, on Friday morning, before work, I took the sides off and converted her cot into a bed so on Friday night, in her mind it hasn't been a cot that evening. I've got a spare fold up bed, I took the mattress off that and put it next to her cot, the first night I checked on her before I went to bed and she was sleeping on that mattress, I put her back and she slept until morning. Last night she had gotten down (I didn't hear a thud) and was sleeping on the floor, put her back and she was fine again. She's taken to it really well, I've very pleased with her. We didn't make a fuss, she's using the same bedding soit's not *too* different for her, same night routine as usual and everything. She does sleep all over the bed and has gotten down - I close her door and the stairgate is closed in front of her door - outside the room so she can't escape. For daytime naps, I watch her signs still and put her upstairs, she plays in her room for about 10 minutes and, just like now, she goes to bed and will stay for as long as she did before.

I just think that If the baby is ready, then they will be fine.

    Good luck x x

My DD is 23 months now and a couple of months ago I moved her into a full size single bed. I was worried at first about her falling out, but she has done well. I have a rail on one side and on the other is the wall. I had to get a blackout blind to help her settle as to begin with she was getting down to play. I went up and just put her back in bed and it wasn't long before she settled into it. I read her bedtime stories and she is happy with the routine now.
