I ran out of Calpol night and went to buy some more and was told you can only buy it for over 2s now. I asked the pharmacist why and she said they had changed it from 3 months or whatever it was before as people had been abusing it. Probably stupid people giving their kids too much to try and get them to sleep. But you can get it on prescription from your gp for under 2s.

you do hun my daughter was really poorly last week rolling around screaming witrh an ear infection then the runny nose chest and throat was a nightmare but that combo really does work and helps them sleep just remember its calpol then 2 hours later ibruprofen then 2 hours later paracetamol and so on so they are staggered that will ease the fever and aches x x x x

I hope so too, things dont seem quite so bad after sleep do they! You feel so bad for them when they are unwell dont you.
Thanks again

you got it hun but even of she had a normal dose of calpol night she could still have the calprofen as calprofen doestnt have paracetamol in same as calpol night doesnt have ibruprofen in x hope it helps little one xx x

Thanks everyone! Right, now this is how seriously dumb i am - my sister works in a pharmacy so why didnt i just phone her?!
So, the short of it is, calprofen can be given, the cal bit just means that its from the calpol family and theres no paracetamol in the calprofen - which i knew anyway, its just that the calpol nights bit threw me completely! The doseage on the calpol nights was 5-10ml and cus she only had 3ml its ok to give her a dose of the calprofen.
Thanks again - means alot to know you arent alone when you have a screaming baby!!!

hoochi - Isn't Calprofen & nurofen pretty much the same? They both contain Ibuprofen don't they??!! Calprofen is just Calpol's version of ibuprofen isn't it or am I just confused?!!
22/9/08 21:25
Calpol night is pretty much the same as Medised. Calpol night contains an antihistamine that makes them drowsy. My dr recommended not using this as he said the antihistamine is unecessary (although ask another dr & you'll get a different answer lol).
HTH

The only difference with calpol night to normal calpol is it has an antihistermine to help with stuffy noses a bit like medised it does not containg ibruprofen therefore you are ok to give an ibuprfen based medicine as they are a different drug x x

hi i would not give calprofen after calpol i would giv nurofen this is totally different to calpol and i would giv calpol and nurofen every 4 hrs if she is that bad alternating not at the same time i dont know about calpol night as it might be stronger than normal calpol and even if she only had 3ml if not given in a full dosage it still best to wait 6hrs untill the next paracetanol dosage if you get me hope she gets better soon x
22/9/08 21:16
was it 6pm you last gave her the 3ml?? If so, try and wait until 10pm if you can??And give her the 5ml. Do you have nurofen on it's own..I promise you giving calpol and nurofen is fantastic..she'll feel so much better, quicker
Big hugs.

you can give ibuprofen intermitently with calpol as calpol is paracetamol based so they are two diiferent types of drug - this was recommended to me by nhs direct when my son had ear infection - i prefer ibuprofen to paracetamol anyway as it is kinder to the stomach i always used neurofen when my son needs it with cold
22/9/08 21:16
Yes you can give calprofen as well. Just check the dosage on calprofen as I thought it was the same dose as calpol and it isn't!! We use calpol night too and have given both as one is paracetamol and the other is ibuprofen. HTH

My daughter (22 months) is exactly the same she has been on antibiotics for an ear infection now is left with a stinking cold and cough! I give her calpol and ibuprofen but not at the same time my dr told me to stagger them so for example you give calpol at 10am then ibruprofen at 12pm then calpol at 2pm then ibruprofen at 4pm and so on so every 2 hours they are getting pain relief for any fever aches and pains. Now my daughter is over the achey bit and just has the runny nose and cough i have moved on to tixylix cough and cold which is 2.5mls every 6 hours. you are fine to give calpol and paracetamol at these intervals as two different types of pain relief hope this helps and hope your little one gets better too x x

Hi, thanks for replying. Ive been frantically googling trying to find a definate yes or no answer, im still at the i *think* its ok stage. Because she only had 3ml instead of the 5-10 recommended im swaying more towards thinking she will be ok with it, but you can never be too careful can you!

Hiya Kate
Dont know if this is helpful to you, My lil man is the same, I gave him Tixylix for the first 24 hours, as the cough was worse than the fever.. I then started giving him calpol and Nurofen (5ML each at the same time) every4-6 hours.. I've never heard of Calpol Night but as long as the calpurofen is the 3months plus it is fine..Hope she's better soon.

I reeeeally need some help please!
My little girl is 22mths old and is pretty rough with a stinking cold and sore throat. I gave her some calpol night tonight at about 6.15, but after only 3ml she started wretching so i stopped. I have googled this and havent really been able to find an answer - although i have found that calpol nights is apparently no longer suitable for the under 2s!
Shes now awake and is needing something else, can i give her some calprofen/ibuprofen aswell?
Thanks!

Please please please report the retching to the makers - number will be on the bottle/box. I work for the company that make Calpol/profen/night etc etc and we have to report any adverse effects we hear of to the company, If you call them you can give all the details.
Hope your LO feels better soon.
