My dd has a cough at the moment which is only happening at night. She also has a runny nose and is dribbling like a trooper during the day. Personally I think her night time cough is becuase she can't just dribble it out like during the day so it's getting stuck if that makes sense making her cough. In that case, there isn't anything i could give her so I just bring her in bed with me, arrange all the pillows so that I sit up and she sits forward laying on my chest ... after about 30 minutes sitting like this, she doesn't cough and then goes back to bed. That's the best thing I've found for her ..

have you tried honey, lemon juice and warm water all mixed together.  The honey has a soothing effect.  I have used it before and it has worked a treat.

Dd goes through phases of night time coughing. It always seems to be at the end of a cold and then drags on for ages, it sounds awful and I hate hearing her coughing away but we have been to the docs many times only to be told nothing is wrong. We prop her mattress, use a karvol plug in and snuffle babe most nights!

    Aaaaaaw bless him.

You're like me - medicine only when absolutely necessary.  When dd had croup (& that was horrible, she'd breathe in & hold her breath before breathing out) the doctor just said plenty of water, raise the mattress & if it got bad to sit in a steamy room (i.e hot tap running in the bathroom with the door shut).  I was told to contact someone if her lips or around them had a blue tinge to them lol!!!

Sorry I can't be any more help, sounds as though you're doing as much as you can.  Hope he gets better soon x

his mattress is raised and he has fleece all in one and light grobag on -  - i have put olpas oil in hot water in his room to help him and on tissue in his vest - i am not one for medicine i like his immune system to fight the cold rather than drugs and medicine and only give him nurofen if he crys as this is his sign that his head hurts and he holds his head to let me know - just frightens me a little when he coughs for long periods then draws his breathe in

My dr said that you shouldn't give cough medicines because they don't really do anything & that the cough is doing good if that makes sense!!!  Maybe try raising the head end of the mattress.  How is lo sleeping?
