hi, ruby is 20 months and until last week not only did she not say any words, there were no animal noises or baby babble, just different whines, this week she has learnt about 6-7 new words a day and yesterday even put 3 words together, speak to you hv by all means but if he can understand what you're saying and he's hearing is ok he'll probably speak when he's ready

If you are worried trust your own jugement because I asked hv at dd1's 2 year check if she thought dd1 had aproblem as she never said the letters at begining and end of words and she said don't worry there are loads of letters they can't say yet so i left it thinking they new best and that it would correct itself.   The same hv saw dd1 at least every fortnight when I took dd2 to be weighed and she still never said anything but when dd1 was 3 1/2 I took dd2 to baby clinic and a different hv questioned how dd1 was speaking and now she is seeing a speach therapist so I don't trust hv anymore.

I would ask your doctors receptionist if your lo can see a speach therapist or how you make an appointment because our speech therapist told me I could have refered dd1 myself if I thought she needed to see her.

I bought jolly phonics cd from early learning and you sing rhymes with all the sounds in maybe this will help have been playing it for dd1 for 3 or 4 months now and dd2 knows all the sounds and her speach is really clear.

    Hi

I wouldn't worry too much.  My ds is now 21 months.  At 20 months he could barely talk but understood every thing we said.  We tried to encourage him to say words but he just wasn't interested at all.  However, in the last 3 weeks he has decided he wants to talk and has probably learnt about 25 word which he uses all the time.  It seemed that all of a sudden he was ready and wanted to and now when we show him pictures of animals he mimics what we call them and finds it fun and wants to learn.

my ds2 is now 21 months and I took him to the HV yesterday (just the normal baby weighing clinic) for a chat about his lack of speech.  She tried to get him to speak with her using pictures in books but he wasn't having any of it and she agreed that he is probably 'behind'. She has made an appointment to see me the day after his second birthday, at home, to assess him further and if necessary, she will then refer to a speech therapist.  So yes, take him to your health visitor and discuss it with her.  Whilst lots of people would say 22 months is late to be speaking, you will see plenty of threads on here from people who's children didn't start talking until 2 1/2 - 3 and they are all perfectly 'normal' so it's nothing to worry about.  Hope that helps a bit.

My advice is to speak to your hv.  Not because I think there is anything to worry about but I think you'll worry until you speak to someone (well, I know I would lol!!).

My ds didn't speak until he was nearly 3yrs - he is 5yrs this month & is slightly delayed in speech (but we did live in Germany until he was 3.5yrs).

Personallly I wouldn't worry they are different with there speaking, boys so they are slower than girls.  My dd talks non stop and has done since she was 18 months, my ds when he was her age didn't talk til her was nearly 2 from what I can remember, I wouldn't worry if I were you.  Does he say some works like mummy, daddy etc?  x
