Ds was 17 month or so when we changed his cot into the bed.  He fell out twice in the first week (we had a big double quilt on the floor in case this happened) and apart from that we've had no incidents...

He doesn't get out of bed when we put him in and we don't have to sit with him or anything.  We knew he was ready because he kept trying to climb out and also kept banging his head on the bars when he was asleep and moving around (!)

If you think your lo is ready try it... Good luck!

to be honest if your lo isn't climbing out of their cot then hang on. My dd is 23 months and we only put her in the cot bed a week ago but now she's out of bed all night knocking on her bedroom door! x
