Affa - you are not a bad mother so please don't think that. I think it is very common for us parent's especially mother's who tend to spend more time with the lo's to think they are somehow to blame. I thought this too at one time but now realise it wasn't anything I did or didn't do.

I'm sure someone on here can give you a better explanation of autism than I can as my ds has not yet been diagnosed with this condition. At your ds age my son wasn't talking either just babbling and he had other issues such as hyperactivity, lack of concentration and impulsiveness. I had a hard time with him at this age.

He was referred by his Preschool for a Speech and Language Assessment at 3 and we had a 7 month wait before we saw the Speech Therapist. She diagnosed him with a severe speech/sound disorder and we were given homework to do with him every day. Now at 4half he never stops talking although he still has difficulty pronouncing some words. The Preschool also referred him to a Paediatrician and she diagnosed social communications difficulties although he has recently had another appointment and he has improved so now has mild social communications difficulties.

His Paediatrician is thinking of referring him in November to see a Clinical Psychologist as they are the professionals who can carry out an autism assessment and also may refer him on with regards to his impulsiveness and overactivity issues.

Sorry for the ramble. I can't remember if you said he is seeing a Speech Therapist but if not ask for a referral and also ask for a referral to see a Paediatrician just to put your mind at rest. I think your HV or GP can refer you if you ds is not attending Preschool yet.

hiya my ds2 will be 2 nxt week, and in march we went for a hearing test because he isnt speaking at all, he babbles but doesnt say any words at all, he had eeg to rule out secondary epilepsy but the hearing test was inconclusive, he has been referred to a speech therapist and we had a teacher from the special needs department visit us today, i hav ds1 who is 11 mths older than ds2 and i have been told that because ds1 is such an extrovert this has caused ds2 to become introverted and this is the reason why he isnt speaking...they have mentioned autism but they are not really giving me much infomation, i just wanted to know what signs i should look out for or if there is any way that i can request an assessment, im pretty sure that he isnt autistic and that he is just bein lazy with his speech, but i do want to ensure that i access all aailable avenues as i am very worried and feel like i am a bad mother   sorry not much help but just wanted to get some advice

Hiya - my son was diagnose initially as HFA in Jan and is now mid way through the 6 week assessment process to find out a more specific diagnosis.  We have been fighting for a diagnosis since he was 13 months - he is now 3 and a half.

my son is in the process of being diagnosed, it very much looks like autism. although it was me that realised that it was probably autism about 3wks ago - it stll didnt make the fact any easier to accept and cope with. My son is 2 at the end of next month.

Ive looked into the 'earlybird programme' and it looks extremely helpful - but obviously we have to wait until the official diagnosis before we can be put forward for it.

So far we've had the blood tests (to rule out a chomosome problem), and we are waiting for the speech therapists appoinyment next month, the 'inclusion team' are also going  to assess him at home.

What are the 'inclusion team'? what do they do? anyone know?

it seems there are quite a few of us who have just received news of our LO's...

i have registerd on waiting list for early bird course but next run whish may have an available space isnt untill january. did this when met family support for local autistic society.

    Hello

My little boy is 3 1/2 we got his diagnosis at about 2 1/2 as well.It hit me like a ton of bricks and i didn't really believe it at first.A year later i have completly accepted it and take all the help I can get.

When you get over the initial shock I can reccomend doing the 'earlybird course'

It is run by Portage.Which should be in your area.

All the best, any questions just ask xxx

Hi it's awful when you first get the diagnosis but it does get better. I have Jack 13 with moderate autism and Lucy 5 with autism also. This is a good place to come for advice and support

Hi there. It's very difficult when you first get a diagnosis ((((hugs)))) but there are lovely people on  here and specific ASD forums which are great for support.

My ds who is 4half hasn't been diagnosed with autism yet but he may be referred to a Clinical Psychologist in November this year for an assessment.
