hi, i dont have a deaf child but i am profoundly deaf in both ears myself...after reading your post i just wanted to say that just because your son is has hearing problems doesnt mean he is doomed! like i said i'm profoundly deaf and my deafness has never stopped me from doing anything i want!

i live with my partner (also profoundly deaf) and little boy (who's hearing is perfect), i went to college when for 2 years! and when my little one goes to school i am looking to study child psycology! i have a friend who is also profoundly deaf and is a lawyer! so what i'm trying to say is that dont feel upset that you have a deaf child, but be proud for who he/she is! your child will grow up to be a happy person just like any other!its quite easy to only think about the negative things about it rather than the positive when you get news like you have but its not all bad i promise lol

all the best to you all! xx

hi my dd id partially deaf in both ears, and unfortunatly always will be as there is nothing they can do to dix it. it wsnt diagnosed until she was 3 and a half as she was passing her hearing tests befroe that! but they arnt very thoro.

she now wears hearing aids in both ears which she wears from getting up in a morning until she goes to bed at night, she loves them (they are purple) and is sooo much better with them her school work and speech has improved no end.(was slightly delayed before).

she goes to a normal mainstream school and mixes with all the other children. the school are really good and talk about it with the other children so they all no that dd cant hear them too well so they have to look at her face so she can lip read.

i must admit when it was first diagnosed i was extremly upset and worried but i didnt need to be she is no difernent so the other children and hopefully will grow up to be whatever she wants to be.

Hi.  My DD is 8 months and has mild to moderate loss in her right ear and severe to profound loss in her left.  She's had hearing aids since 4 months.  Everyone's been brilliant, we see the Audiologist every 6 weeks, we have a Teacher of the Deaf who comes every week and attend a local playgroup for the deaf.  We have even been assigned a Speech and Language Therapist already, who is meeting us next week.

It's been hard and initailly very upsetting.  But now we are all used to it and things are going well.  My DD is a happy girl, but very mischevious, she loves pulling her her aids out!

If you want to talk about anything, pm me.  It's always better knowing there are others out there.

Hey guys. I've been going through the diagnostic process of deafness with my son Seb, who failed his hearing screening in one ear at birth. This meant he needed to go back at 8/9 months and do the VDA which came up with the result of moderately deaf and needing amplification (hearing aids) in both ears, special needs, etc.

We were shocked and did as much research as possible, whilst also disbelieving the actual diagnosis due to his level of response in the home.

Its very very important that a child with hearing loss, if they do not have the full range of hearing in at least one ear, has the help of amplification at least in the early years as they are developing speech. A child might appear to be hearing things around the home but unless they can hear 1000hz at 10 Db then they for instance may not hear the letter "s" and as a result will speak differently, and perhaps struggle with communication as a result.

Its a whole new ball game when you are dealing with severe or profound deafness, where communication with your child can be very difficult and require a lot of "homework". Disability Living Allowance and Carerers allowance can help with this, and may allow you to stay home and help your child where you otherwise may have had to work.

My heart goes out to anyone who is in the process of diagnosis which is a huge emotional rollercoaster. In a bizarre twist of fate (but what I thought all along) Seb was cleared of hearing loss, because they messed up the test, and his ears are in fact fine. But it still changed me these few weeks and I do know what you are going through.

The NDCS is very good, and they have a wonderful website with a forum called "Parent Place". There are lots of mums and dads going through exactly the same thing.

Best of luck - I read from one parent that everything will work out fine - I dont know if it does, but it did for her, and I hope it does for everyone. Big hugs

Hi there. My friend's baby is the same age as my lo (nearly 10 months) and she failed the first hearing tests and had her first hearing aids at about 2 months. She is partially deaf in both ears and they go to a special mum and baby group every week and have a sensory consortium teacher assigned to them already. Her lo has these fab hearing aids and the moulds come in all sorts of colours and are really cool. Her lo is fine with the hearing aids and they have all got used to it after the initial shock. good luck!

Hi, im going through the same thing as you, and have been for the past 5 years.

My daughter who is 5 failed every hearing test til she was 2, i was up the hospital every 3 months, without answers. the ENT consultant discharged her at 2 with no answers to why she was failing the tests. she had speech theraphy cause her speech is unclear and her understanding is poor.

i then had my son 3 years later and went through the same thing with him. He failed newborn hearing tests, every 1-3months up the hospital with hearing tests, NO answered, so i gave up, and ignored all appointments sent through., and then my HV made me go back up there for more tests cause he wasnt speaking, and FINALLY after 2 years 3 months of tests, a lovely lady finally told me my son had mod/ serve hearing loss in both ear and will need hearing aids.  even then is wasnt easy as the consultant didnt want to give him hearing aids, he just wanted to keep testing, I was livided, for god sake, he didnt speak and lived in his own little world. so now he had hearing aids, and is coming on more and more each day, his behavoiur has improved and he's started trying to say words.  he also suffers from glue ear, and will be seeing the consultant again in 3 months, to see how its geting on, if its still there he will have grommits inserted, which will help his hearing, as glue ear worsens his hearing.

well after that i got my other 3 daughter tested, including the daughter dicharged at 2, and well well well, after only 2 hearing tests they finally diganosed her with a mild hearing loss, and she now has hearing aids.

LOL sorry long story, BUT keep fighting it, cry scream shout at them, its the only way that seem to make then stop listen to me.

    The end, hehe

My ds1 had glue ear in both ears and was subsequently partially deaf in both. He had grommits fitted in both and it was almost an instant cure. His speech was delayed but rapidly improved as did his behaviour and reading. Strangely enough one of his grommits has only just fallen out ...5yrs later?! Doubt it had remained in its proper place all this time but will be interested to see any changes. Pm me if I can tell you anything...x

my dd failed all of her hearing tests when she was a baby and at 3 had her first set of grommets.. i must say that they will try all they can before they give your lo hearing aids.. (or at least the hospital we are under do).. i know that it can be quite nervy especially when they talk about putting your lo under but it does work a lot of the time.. my dd has had 3 sets of grommets and a set of t tubes which are like grommets but last longer and now only at 11 they are thinking about hearing aids.. i understand this might not be the same as your lo but just wanted to say it can all turn out ok.. (oh and if your lo does need hearing aids they do some really funky colours nowadays)..
