My dd has Downs and was also born with heart defects. She had a coarctation of the aorta along with narrowing of the aorta and also had a complete AVSD. She had operations at 19days and 6mths (ish) to correct both of these and is now as strong as an ox and other than the scars you would never know she'd had any trouble. I won't lie and say it wasn't a stressful time though but it's all sorted now and it was us who went through the mill with that, not her - she was giggling even in ICU.
She's an absolute delight, always smiling and laughing. She is doing extremely well in all areas of development. We were told she'd probably only be crawling by the time she was 18mths - 2yrs but in fact she's now walking (she'll be 2 in October). She has had no trouble with her bowels or stomach and isn't on any medication, she's pretty much the same as any other child of her age. The only thing she is 'behind' with is her speech but that's coming along and she completely understands everything you say.
It's not a 'big deal' to us at all, we just treat her the same as any other child and it seems to be working for us (and more importantly her).

Sadly i can only tell you bad story of my experience of downs syndrome but i feel its right that you get both sides i found out my son had downs syndrome at twenty weeks pregnant he also had AVSD. Heart defects are common with down syndrome my son was stillborn at 36 weeks due to heart failre during labour this happens rarely but i thought you would want to hear both sides of the story
but i will say children with down syndrome are a joy

hi
i have a little boy who has downs,he has no medical problems what so ever.
i think the severity side of downs is mainly to do with heart defects and problems with stomachs. when i was having my little boy the test was 1 in 103. hth

Hi,
Im not an expert but i have a downs lad work with me 2 days a week, i think in relation to the score type system it bears not realtion to the downs just your age and other factors. Most of them have the same problems from birth but there are who have more severe difficulties. I would also add I've know people who have been high risk like your friend and turned out the babies were fine.
Downs babies are so special and i have the pleaure to say i've worked with this great lad for 8 years now. Im sure if you trawl through the internet enough you will get some answers.
Regards

My friend had a stillbirth in febuary this year and is now pregnant again and has decided to have every test there is.
The mw visited her at home yesterday and told her she is at high risk of having a downs baby, I don't quite understand the numbers but she was told 82.
She has to go to the hospital this afternoon for a scan and has an appointment for an amnio this afternoon but she still isn't sure if to have it or not because she is scared of the risks.
Something we are unsure of is if there are different severities of downs syndrome? I don't have any personal experience of anyone with downs but from the people I have seen with it they all seem very happy and friendly and I'm sure some go on to lead normal lives living in thier own homes with their own jobs? Is this true?
Sorry I have rambled a bit, I think my question is, is there diefferent severities of downs? Do some people have it a lot more than others?
I'm really sorry to be so niave
xXx

yes there is diffrent types of downs syndrome
there is
Regular trisomy 21 - all the cells have an extra chromosome 21. Around 94 per cent of people with Down's syndrome have this type.
Translocation - the extra chromosome 21 material is attached to another chromosome and one of the parents may carry the translocated chromosome without any signs of the condition themselves. This accounts for around 4 per cent of cases.
Mosaic - only some of the cells have an extra chromosome 21. Around two per cent of people with Down's have this type, which tends to result in milder features.
hope that helps ...
