It could be that he's just not ready. I didn't move my ds1 into a bed until he was 2 years 3 months and then it was only because ds2 needed the cot! Maybe give it another month and try again...there's no rush after all. When he's a bit older you might need to be tough if he's still acting up and just go up, take the clothes out of his room and anything else he throws around, without looking at him or speaking to him just pop him back in bed and leave. He'll soon realise that what he's doing doesn't get him anywhere and will give up.
That's just my advice....I had to do that with ds1 and it worked. Good luck

My youungest is 2 years 1 month nearly.
I took his side down from his cot and put a bed guard up. Well he had all draws out clothes and stuff everwhere. I ended up putting the side back on.
Can anyone think of a way to get him to stay in bed?
He is smaller than averge and is still in 12-18 months clothes as he is short so I waited until now to change.
My oldest son was 21 months when we change his bed and slept fine ever since the first night.
Just need some advice.

I left it till absolutely necessary to take the sides off - what's the hurry? DS started jumping out of his cot at 2y4m.
He was better at not falling out once we got a bed guard. At first he did empty his drawers etc and I was on the verge of reluctantly removing the furniture but then a little accident made him more careful. He used the drawers to climb up and got on the top about 4 feet high. He used to just shout out cos he couldn't get down, then one day he knocked a big picture off the wall and it came down with such a crash (not near him luckily) it scared him and he has never climbed up there again!
Not much help I'm afraid, but you never know, something will prob just click one day and he won't do it again. I'd leave the sides on as long as possible if I were you.
PS we had a stairgate on his door to keep him in his room or he would just repeatedly come downstairs for about 2 hours after bedtime which was very wearing
