This happened a lot with DD1 when she started at nursery and then when she started school but they are still young and their immune systems aren't fully developed but it does get better! DD2 starts nursery next week so expecting to all start with her!28/8/08 09:11
hey hun, aidens the same 3 in jan, and been going to nursery 2 afternoons a week since june, and yup has caught colds and croup etc from being there, thankfully tho he goes on monday and friday so seems to get ill over the weekend....altho there good at his nursery say he was ill they could just put him in a diff day so he doesnt miss out.
i think there gonna get ill at school... or other times so its best to get some things out the way, im hoping he'll catch chicken pox soon so he doesnt have to deal with it when hes older, but nits im not looking forward too..
i just think its one of those things, your right they do catch alsorts at nursery but hopefully not too much.
i wouldnt worry about it, its not like she'll get ill everyweek xx

I think this is quite common, certainly happened with my dd. My GP (whose children go to the same nursery as my dd!) said that it usually lasts a year while they get used to being exposed to different bugs; she also said that it is actually a really positive thing as it strengthens immune systems, and young children who have had lots of colds etc are much less likely to develop things like childhood leukiamia when older. That made me feel much better about it (even though it was a hassle sorting out alternative care so that I could go to work occasionally!)

i understand what you mean but i think it is some thing that will eventually sort it self may be have a word with doctor she if there is a reason for all the illnesses may be a weak immune system of some thing i suppose if theyt havnt been round to many kids for a while then they will pick up every thing is there no where else you could go a bit further away if kids are a bit dirty round your end like you say then i guess there will be lots of illnesses hope your little one is ok

Libby is 2.5 (3 in Jan) and due to start preschool on Monday. 1 morning and 1 afternoon a week. I havent got a problem with her going as I know she'll be fin but its her being ill I worry about. Last year from June to November she went to nursery 2 mornings a week while I worked and she was so ill all the time. I dont just mean the odd sniffle, I mean she had the worst eve tummy bugs, sickness, full on flu type colds etc. I would send her on Monday by Tuesday she would be ill with something then Id keep her off she'd get better then go back and get something else. I took her out in November as I was paying for her to be at home most of the time and her health is fine....nothing, no colds, bugs, anything. Im so worried about her getting ill again and not just ill but all the time ill. I dont know what to do. This sounds terrible but I live in a bit of a rough area and I would be lucky of the mums send their kids in a clean jumper for the term let alone anything for their illness.
Do you think Im being silly? xx

I wouldn't worry too much, it's just another joy of having young children. I can guarantee within a few weeks of going back my middle son (6) will have a filthy cold, cough which makes him vomit and possibly nits if I'm really lucky!!! DD (3) is going back to nursery for 5 mornings in September and I've giving it a week for the nits and I'm hedging my bets on how long it is for the vomiting and tummy bugs to start!! However in saying all that it really does build their immune systems to get all these things at a young age and they do harden to them and by the time they get to 7/8/9 etc they don't tend to go down with nearly as much. My eldest DS is nearly 13 and apart from the odd sniffle and a couple of "fluey" days which he had off school I can't remember in the last 5 years when he has been really poorly so I think it is something they grow out of. Unfortunately they have to have these things to build up an immunity to it. If she is constantly being very poorly have you had her immune system checked to make sure there isn't any underlying cause as to why these bugs make her so ill? I hope she stays well xx
