with my ds i used to say to stay in bed like a big boy and we will do ('whatever you are doing the next day that is fun i.e park or whatever') but you HAVE to do it as the next day it wont work if you havent kept your end of the bargain.  Its blackmail yeah yeah but it worked for us.......and if he doesnt buy it , then say 'well, we can't go to such and such tomorrow now'.  Maybe worth a try???? also............. if he is paddying at his gate....calmly walk to him and pop him back into bed with no eye contact or talkng and he may get bored. sorry i cant be of any more help.

I used to take a book up to bed with him, and sit next to his bed and read it ( sorry should have stipulated it was a book for me to read) and I just used to sit next to him until he feel asleep. He will now go to bed no problem, but he wakes every night and comes into our room,, This part of the problem I have not managed to crack yet. But heres hoping.

Our DS who is 26 months had to be put in a toddler bed on Monday as he had been throwing himself out of his cot and we feared he would injure himself.

He has always been a poor sleeper and rarely settled straight to sleep but controlled crying seemed to work. Now he gets out of bed as soon as I walk away (even after 3 bedtime stories, all his teddies and kisses and a song) and stands at the baby gate paddying and screaming.

The gate is secure but I'm terrified he will pull it off the wall! To settle him I have had to put my head on his pillow so he can stroke my eyebrows (a little habit of his!). Eventually last night I got fed up and after 20 mins of laying with him I told him I was going to bed (a lie) and left him with his teddy

He slept till 11:45 then woke up but when I took him to bed he went back off. Then he woke at 3:45 but wouldn't go back in bed he just did the whole "first being put to bed" routine" and eventually to my disappointment this morning I put him in our bed and he fell asleep instantly till 8pm!

What can work? I feel cruel leaving him to cry as won't he recognise the bed as a bad place if I do? Please please help
