I thought it would be along those lines.... I bet ds will go all quiet too... he jabbers away when its just me & dh but when others are around, he shuts up !

I'm surprised its not done in all area's though - I wonder why ?

Hi, it's initially a weight, height check, then get your child to do wee tasks i,e, use building blocks, name pictures like bird, house, car etc-just checks they are reaching milestones.  My DD got her's just before 2nd birthday and they told me she is doing fine, ofcourse she knows loads of words and can identify things, but when HV asked she went all quiet!
