I had terrible trouble breastfeeding my daughter. She was born at 27 weeks and although I've kept expressing she never really got the hang of it. At first she would latch on but not really get anywhere. We discovered that she had a tongue tie so couldn't latch on properly. This was snipped but she still took ages to get anywhere. Th efirst day that they checked the tube for a feed and there was actually breast milk in her tummy was fantastic! I tried rooming in to establish breast feeding but after the first night she had her first bottle! I felt dreadful but the nurses were all so supportive. She is now 14 weeks old and at home. She is still bottle feeding breast milk but I am about to stop expressing. What ever you do, don't beat yourself up about breastfeeding, it's an incredibly emotional subject but you just have to do what's best for your whole family. My dh loves the fact he can join in feeding too!11/5/08 07:13
Kaiya was born at 32 weeks and struggled, they wouldn't let her latch on at first because they said it was too tiring for her and once they she was strong enough she just couldn't do it, i tried in vain for 7 weeks but no luck and resorted to the bottle ( her not me lol ) i did express for the first 2-3 months before putting her on nutriprem. Just keep trying hun if it doesn't work don't feel too upset sometimes prems just stuggle to latch on.

hey did anyone have any problems breastfeeding their premature baby, my baby was born at 35 weeks and does not seem to be interested in breastfeeding, how did u overcome this problem??

Have you tried nipple shields? Hannah was born at 34+1 and was in scbu for 3 weeks. Once she was allowed to try to breastfeed, she really struggled to latch on. She didn't get the hang of it properly until she was 5 weeks old. Until then I used nipple shields, topped her up with formula or expressed milk, then expressed after that. I was exhausted, especially with a 3 1/2 year old too. By the time she learnt to latch on my milk was really dwindling, but I managed to keep going with breastfeeds and top ups for 3 1/2 months. When I was out and about I used bottles because she tended to be on and off so much, which I found embarrassing. This wouldn't have helped my milk supply and I wish I'd stayed at home more and perservered, rather than wanting to be out and about being 'normal' with my son. I found it really hard to finally give in and give up and still get pangs now and again when I see people breastfeeding. I really wanted to keep going for a lot longer. However, she is a really happy, healthy, contended child, so I could never be anti-bottle or anti-formula.
