Prem babies need to be weaned slighty early as they end up losing lots of nutirents from the womb ( what i was told by neo natal team ) my hv is crap and has never had a prem baby in her team before so doesn't have a clue and anything i ask her she always tells me to see gp or to phone neo-nantak team at hospital. If you can hold off for a few more weeks it will be better for him, Kaiya was weaned at 22 weeks of age borna ta 32 weeks gestation, but if you find he's downing bottles and wants more go for baby rice but introduce slowly.

My little boy was born 30+4 he is now 17 weeks old and weighs 11lb 1oz, i have asked hv about weaning she said leave it another 10 weeks as he was born so early. im really confused as GP and Ped said to wean at 5 months and to treat him like any other normal baby, i have read other articles that have had babies weaning at 17 weeks but others stating not to start before 17 weeks. He makes chewing motions is always putting fists in his mouth, can hold his head up and makes a fuss when we are eating, hes having feeds every three hours and taking over 700ml+ in 24 hours, any advise please?

HI
I had my little one at 31 + 4 wks. I was told to wait till he was 8 mths corrected age by the local nursery nurse and then the hv told me to start earlier than that in the end i started weaning him when he was 6 months corrected age, i just followed what my baby wanted and from my training (i'm a nursery nurse). I started him on baby rice + then pureed veg + fruit, i find the annabel karmel books good. My lo seems to like most of the receipes. he's now a healthy 10month old apart from a kidney problem + weighs over 21lbs. I feel the same ab out some of the hv as most of them have never had a premature baby themselves. Good luck with the weaning its great fun especially seeing their faces when they taste something new!!!!!
