Hi, my dd is 4 weeks old tomorrow & my milk has slowly started to decrease etc.. spoke to midwives about it and they suggested alot of what the other ladies have said however they had also advised me that there is a tablet they can prescribe you if it totally starts to decrease xx

Hi, To give you some hope - my ds was born at 26wks and I expressed every 3hrs for 12weeks when he came home fully breastfed - he is now nearly 6mths and still feeding well.

At the start I got loads and filled 3 freezers !! (about 120ml a time - 60ml from each breast) Then there were times, esp on bad bays where I would struggle to get 10-20ml from each. The thing to remember is that as long as you continue to stimulate them it doesn't matter how much you get, Try not to go longer than 3hrs during the day and 5hrs at night and only express for 10-15mins at a time.

The suggestions given already are great to stimulate your suppy also try eating dark chocolate and porridge oats work wonders !!! But most importantly relax.

    Good Luck.

Hello.  I had a reduced about of milk too and found that once I relaxed about it, and stopped giving myself a hard time because it was low, it came back.  I was getting really stressed about it because I missed out on labour due to pre-eclampsia and really wanted to at least be able to breast feed.

Whatever amount you can give to you baby is great and you have done well to give your baby the best start you can.  You can be proud of what you have already done.

However, if you are still worried, you can also get prescribed domperidone  (Not sure that is spelt right) from the docotr, which is a drug that can increase milk flow.  My mid wife at the time said that not all mothers that have it find they have to take it but that having in the cupboard in case can sometimes help you relax enough because you have a back up just in case.  I never acutally got it but it was nice to know there was another option to pursue if needed.

Also to give you hope, my baby was 29+4 and is now home after nine weeks and full time breastfeeding, so although we went through some tough times, if you stick with it, even when milk is low, you will hopefully get the result you want.  Best of luck

From experience I know expressing can be soo hard and especially since we all want to keep up with the demand of our babies. 40 mls isnt a bad result though within a week.

My daughter was born at 28+5 weeks almost 6 weeks ago and at the moment I express about 50 to 60 mls a time, sometimes more. The first few weeks I only had tiny amounts, now I have a freezer drawer full on the stuff as my supply is higher then she needs at the moment.

With my son I struggled big time trying to match his needs. It took a long time for my milk to come in then (he was born at 30+2) and when my milk did come in I couldnt keep up with his needs at all at first, however at 4 weeks he came home fully breastfed.

Letting your baby latch on even when not sucking much can help milk supply as can skin to skin, having a picture of your baby near when you express or expressing at cot side. Also diet and taking plenty of time to express can help.

Expressing 2-3 hourly but for short periods of time can also have better results then expressing with longer gaps in between and for longer.

I found sitting next to Theo's incubator helped my milk come. I think it helps stimulate you being near your baby. The nurse recomended it to me so perhaps you could ask if you would be able to. They put screens around the incubator to give you a bit of privacy. I am sure they will let you do this as all 3 of the hospitals Theo spent time in supported it. I found that when i was expressing at home i wold get so little but as soon as i was near him it would pour out, its really strange. hth x x
