My son was born 8 weks early with strep b and bacterial meningitis. We were terrified when we bought him home , so got him an apnea alarm. Go on Google and type in respisense. Its a tiny alarm that clicks with every movement and goes off if it doesnt feel any movement after 15 secs with a rumble to stir the baby like a mobile phone has and a alarm if no movement or breath after 20 secs. it clips onto the nappy so it doesnt matter if your LO rolls around as your not relying on a sensor mat which are always going off. I wouldnt have slept without it!! Only cost £75.00. Smaller than a matchbox and delivery in 2 days.

    Good luck

Our monitor and sensor pad is a Tommee Tippee one and we got it from Mothercare - think it cost about £90. x

The one i am using is a babysense 2, made by hisense. It is on loan from the health visitor and she says i can have it as long a i want. It reccomends for use up to 12 months on the box, but think i will use it until his due date just to keep my mind at rest. hth

I have a sensor pad for Theo, as when his apnea alarm was taken off i was in a constant panic and couldn't sleep. It is much better as it lays under the mattress and the wires come through the slats in the cot, so perfectly safe. Theo is 10 months old now and hasn't alarmed in 5 months but its for my peace of mind. I think i would worry about an apnea alarm geting tangled now, Theo is s right wriggler.

My daughter Isabella had an apnea monitor (and a saturation monitor) and came off it when she was about 7 months old (she is now 9.5 months) on the advice of the Community Neonatal Nurses.  We were worried at first and I was constantly checking her during the night (at the time she was still in our bedroom).  It was starting to alarm during the night - false alarms thankfully!  The nurses told me that they should come off them at 6 months and I did find Isabella with the wire up near her neck some mornings!  We moved Isabella to her own room shortly after and we bought a baby monitor with a sensor pad for under her matress but to be honest we have never used the sensor pad. It is a scary at first and I still go and check on her in the night but touch wood she has been fine. x
