i know your disapointed but its better for you to have all the other tests done at a fertility specialist first
there could be a number of reasons why you are not pg such as dh sperm or blocked tubes etc. metforin wouldnt help with these and if this was the case and the gp just gave you the metforim it would delay your bfp even longer than waiting for the specialist
i only waited 18 days from gp refering me till i actually seen the specialist so wasnt long at all - i know i was very lucky but around here if you get refered you have to be seen within 6 weeks - something to do with the goverment timetables so this should be the same where you live

We've been trying for #2 for year, and I have a previous history of PCOS. I went to the doc last week for some blood test results (Which were OK) and asked if I could try Metformin. He's said no. He's agreed to send me to the specialist but won't let me have anything before that. Who knows how long I'll have to wait for my apointment. I'm really disappointed.

Thanks Bev, that gives me some hope, 18 days isn't long. What part of the country are you in? I'm in Glos, our doctors surgery is really good usually and he did promise to get me an appointment where-ever could see me soonest (The are 3 hospitals within the same distance). Oh well, wait wait wait some more...........
