kids r awake so will b short n sweet.

jsut because you have groiup B strep doesnt mean you have to give up ur home birht hun.

hav a look at www.homebirth.org for some great info on it.

there no definate proof that antibiotics in labour actually help stop the baby gettin group B strep. also if you have a quick labour you baby will be given IV antibiotics after labour anyway... and all of this even if your baby DOESNT have it.

me personally ifi test positive will be havign my hb, gettin the baby tested for it after birth and then treated if need be.

Hi, sorry to leave it so long before replying but yeah, help yourself. If passing on info like this helps just one person then its all worth it isn't it?!

I hope it goes someway to informing others about this infection which is so common yet so unheard of. x

Water baby.  I wonder if you mind me copy and pasting your message that was posted  on 21st at 22:32 into the 'dueinJan' forum as you have some good info and links there that could be of use.  I think this is something that needs to be made more aware to young women as it is obviously potentially life threatening for our babies!

    Thanks

    Vicky

That is true in some situations (in early pregnancy BUT in later pregnancy the test is a lot more sensitive when taken (between 35 and 37 weeks)  and it said that if you test positive then the likelihood is 87% of women will have it during labour too (with risk of passing it onto bubs)

I am so sorry that this has happened to you, but it is great that at least you know now and get the appropriate treatment.

I know how disappointing it is to give up on your home birth, I was also planning a home birth this time a well and have had to change to a hospital one instead. But at the end of the day it is what is safest for baby.

    Good luck with everything,

    Jen x

I'd read in a magazine (Pregnancy and Birth I think) about the Group B Strep campaign, saying how it should be available to all women on the NHS as the consequences of passing it into child can be devastating and it said a petition of over 11,000 names had been handed into Downing Street.

The reason why I had it done specifically is cos I thought that if I DID have it and didn't know about it, and went onto have my hb, if I DID pass it onto baby then it would take longer to maybe notice, therefore putting bubs at greater danger. Babies can fall ill very quickly due to GBS and some of the medical consequences of babies having GBS are very dire (meningitis, septicemia, pneumonia, etc, and I hate to say it - death) - I didn't want to risk it, so I felt that I should find out for definite.

Now that I know that I do have it, I can have the necessary medical procedures (although it was the last thing I wanted) to prevent the infection being passed onto my darling baby.

I hope that I've been able to answer your question.

For reference, I got my test from http://www.mumstuff.co.uk/acatalog/Group-B-Streptococcus-Screening-Test-Kit.html#aDL0001

It's tested by The Doctors Laboratory and there's more information on GBS at www.gbss.org.uk.

i am sure your birth will be just as lovely in the hospital. i didnt get my second homebirth last year like i wanted i had induction at 39 weeks and although i was disapointed at first i soon came around to the idea and we were home the same day that i went in i didnt even have to stay overnight.

so you never know might just be a slight detour from your hb.

awww, I'm so sorry to hear that.  I imagine this is a terrible disappointment for you but you have to do what's best for the baby

Can I ask what prompted you to get a test done privately?

I paid for a private test for Group B Strep and got the result back today - it's positive, so I need to go into hospital to have antibiotics administered via an IV drip when my waters break and throughout labour.

I've asked if it'll be possible to take my birthing pool into hospital, as they don't have a birthing pool there and although the mw wasn't hopeful, she said she'd do everything she could to get it allowed.

I just want to wish all you lovely ladies GOOD LUCK with your homebirths. Hope you have healthy happy babies. xxx
