Thanks everyone for the messages of congratulations. I do appreciate how lucky I am to have had the birth I always wanted and I have to thank my dh and my mw for their wonderful support. I would like to thank all the Bounty forum ladies as well, particularly 'homebirth' forum for all the advice and encouragement as well. Good luck to all those who are awaiting arrivals.

    Hi Lily,

    Congratulations and welcome Violet.

With the knowledge and effort you have obviously put into this birth you deserved for it to be as wonderful as it was.

If i was to do it again i would have an independant mw.Its the safest way to avoid a tramatic birth.

Violet has been a lucky baby yo have this kind of birth, i bet she will have a calm disposition.

Congratulations Lilee! I'm so glad you got the homebirth you wanted - it's amazing when a plan comes together isn't it?! What a shame all births can't be as wonderful. Welcome little Violet (beautiful name btw). love Emm x

Sounds like an amazing birth. I've had a c-section, induced VBAC and spontaneous VBAC waterbirth now...my goal for next time is to have a home waterbirth. Last labour I had 10 mins of gas n air, next time I think I'll try without.

Congratulations on your little girl, I'm sure your husband and sons are just as much in love with her than you are

    Hi,

My apologies for the lack of punctuation. The original had capital letters and full stops!

an ambulance was called and i went to derby city general hospital with jo, my mother and baby daughter (my husband stayed at home so the boys wouldn’t get too upset finding both parents missing in the morning) - the time was approximately 3am.

***> ***> ***> ***> in hospital i was put on a synthetic oxytocin drip for a couple hours and at 5am a nimble-fingered doctor managed to fish the remaining piece of placenta out. it was the size of a lamb's heart and looked a lot like one too - it was tightly contracted. no need for theatre - hooray. whilst in hospital jo was a star. she sutured my 2nd degree tear, much to the relief of the hospital midwives - they were extremely busy that night and not having to attend to me was a relief for them. (i can’t help feeling that it was lucky i didn't have to give birth there as well then!) jo also helped me wash, dress and clean my teeth. i felt like i was being properly nursed and cared for - something i'm sure the hospital midwives wouldn't have been able to do (being too busy and all - tsk). i was discharged at 7am and home for 8am and breakfast with the boys.***> ***> ***> ***>it wasn't till a day later that i remembered that jo hadn't got the entonox out of her car. i had managed to birth my baby at home without any pain relief and i hadn't even realised it. at no point did i ever think “i can’t do this” and, less than a week later, i feel that i could go through it all again. however, this is my last birth (no more babies for me) and it is great to go out on a high. all-in-all, a truly wonderful birth experience. the waterbirth was a fantastic calm affair and i even feel relatively content about tranferring to hospital. it was such an unhurried event (without panic or blue flashing lights and the ambulancemen were extremely considerate). the labour-ward midwives and doctor were respectful of my desire to avoid unnecessary intervention and let me discharge early without a fuss. finally, i cannot praise my independent midwife highly enough for her calm, reassuring, and above-all professional manner – she helped me to realise the birth i always wanted and i will cherish this event forever.***> ***> ***> ***> ***> ***>lily gornall 8th august 2008***> ***> ***> ***>

    hi,

***> ***>i gave birth to our lovely baby daughter on sunday 3rd of august 2008 at shortly after midnight. her name is violet mary.***> ***> ***> ***> i had been in mild labour since saturday at 3am when my hind-waters released. the surges were very mild and were every 8 minutes apart and lasting about 45 seconds. i decided to go back to sleep and they went away, restarting in the morning in pretty much the same pattern. they continued throughout the day and my independent midwife (jo) came to see me at 9pm. established labour didn't actually take off till after jo examined me on saturday night at around 10pm. i was 3-4cm dilated and the cervix was extremely soft. her advice to me was to lie down in a darkened room and to go into a trance-like 'cocoon' state as she felt that my anxiety about lack of progress was holding me back. that did the trick! when my mother came in to check on me an hour later i was having regular, strong surges with moderate backache. she massaged my back (what a star! - she was an expert) and my fore-waters released with a 'pop' a few surges later.***> ***> ***> ***>we moved downstairs at 11.30pm and i leant over my birthball and managed to breathe through each surge whilst my mum continued to massage my back. at about 11.45pm jo suggested we move through to another room where the birthpool had been set up and i got in. ahhh - bliss. i was so comfortable and the surges became stronger and were every couple of minutes and lasting about a minute. shortly before midnight i began bearing down and breathing/panting/groaning through the surges. i gripped my husband's hands and the back massage my mum was providing was still helping me tremendously. i could feel my daughter moving down the birth canal and as she was nearing crowning i could feel her slipping back a couple of times. all the while jo discreetly monitored me and whispered words of encouragement. the lights were low and i had a 'morcheeba' cd playing quietly in the background.***> ***> ***> ***>i was helped to turn over so i was facing into the pool, rather than leaning over the side so i could brace my legs and a couple of surges later my baby crowned. with the aid of a mirror i could see she was face up (a posterior baby – that explains the backache). there was a lull for a couple of minutes and i waited for the final surge to push her body out. it never came - she just swam out of me and into mine and jo’s arms. when she was lifted out of the water she made a little sob but struggled to get her breath straight away so jo manually suctioned some mucous from her airway and soon she was crying loudly and with gusto.***> ***> ***> ***>the time was 13 minutes midnight and it was my mother's birthday. i said “happy birthday mom”. meanwhile, upstairs, my 2 sons slept soundly on.***> ***> ***> ***>i got out of the pool to deliver the placenta after the cord stopped pulsating. my husband cut the cord. after an hour jo suggested that i move to the toilet to see whether this would help birth the placenta. half an hour later, after breastfeeding, bearing down, coughing, a dose of caullophylum and producing only a tennis-ball-sized clot, i decided i wanted the syntometrine to speed things up. after 2 attempts at cord traction i birthed the placenta but there was sizeable chunk missing. i was feeling faint and shaky by this time and after discussing all my options i agreed that transfer to hospital was in everyone’s best interests. an ambulance was called and i went to derby city general hospital with jo, my mother and baby daughter (my husband stayed at home so the boys wouldn’t get too upset finding both parents missin
