hi my son has chronic constipation and suffers from the overflow diahrea (sp?) he had food intolerences and the thankfully they have sorted themselves out now but we are still left with this problem, he has a continence nurse which see's him as often as is needed at that time she prescribed him benefibre and movicol, the benfibre worked like amiracle cure he gets it in his breakfast each morning and if he misses a dose then he can have one maybe two accidents we only use the movicol for when he is constipated as the benefibre is so good at keeping him regular. things are not perfect with him but we do all the usual rewards for when he goes without being rushed up to the bathroom etc. he started school this year and i do provide them with a bag of spare clothing wipes nappy bags etc.

my ds who is 3 has had constipation since being a year old. he was on lactulose to start with, but it gave him terrible stomach cramps and he would be up crying all night. one day he was so backlogged with poo, that as he was trying to poo he was bleeding quite badly, we took him to a&e and thats when they gave him movicol. hes been on it 2yrs now. we often have to alter the dose to get it right, but it has been a lifesaver. he doesnt have cramps anymore and is a lot happier and his appetite has improved loads.

he started potty training in july and is now almost fully trained, no wee accidents and dry at night, but we sometimes get the odd overflow accident still. when this happens, i up his dose by half a sachet then take it back down to normal when hes pooing normal again. i just make sure i carry loads of spare clothes around with me!!! he is currently only on half a  sachet a day, and has an appointement next month with his paediatrition so im sure she will be pleased with his progress.

he will start school in sept 09 and that worries me. just like some of the other posters have said, their children oftern do overflow in their pants. do you have to take extra clothes to school for them to change in to? im know im probably worrying way too early but thats just me!!!

we're doing ok but just wondered how do you all get your kids to take it? My daughter has it in milk (but shes not keen) but she says it tastes foul in water. Just wondered if anyone had a way of making it more palatable?

I have posted on this topic in the past when my DS now 4 had similar problems with pooing in his pants etc. Started when he was about 2 for around 12-15 months, started off on lactulose which I didnt think helped but movicol def did. would just like to recommend a book that i found helpful called "Constipation, Withholding and Your Child" by Anthony Cohn. This book explains the difference btwn"witholding" and constipation and explains it like this; almost all children who present with constipation dont have constipation as we think of it, invariably they are stool withholding. All their effort and straining is not trying to poo it is trying not to poo and this in turn has a lot of knock on effects" This is not a book just for potty training it is also is geared towards older children/adults. Its written in very clear and easy to understand language and i certainly wasnt aware of "withholding" but docs etc are very quick to see it as a "constipation" issue. Hope this helps.

wow paco , 5 sachets is a huge dose. poor little man. is there anything else they can do long term? connor takes 2 sachets , but if he has been taking it regularly and we are having a good week then we can cut down to 1 for maintainance.

Hi, my ds has the same probs. it started when he was 18 months and had a painful poo on his potty. Kept going to drs as i knew something wasnt right, he would be playing then all of a sudden stop and cross his legs and his face would go bright red as he was trying so hard to keep it in. Drs just kept fobbing me off and changing his medicine etc. When he was 3 i had had just about enough and insisted I saw a specialist about it. The 1st person i saw didnt really help just gave advice of putting him on toilet just after hed eaten etc but still wasnt doing the job. Then she left and the next person we saw at hospital had one feel of his tummy (was the 1st person to even bother) and immediately said he had a huge blockage of poo and there was no way possible he could pass that on his own. He had to have 2 bowel stretches and was completely emptied twice. That was almost a year ago and things have improved a lot. He is on 5 sachets of movicol a day and does still have the odd accident. without the operation I dont think we would have been any further foward.

It is absolutely heart breaking but its good to know your child is not the only one and its obviously a lot more common than i thought.

hi everyone , just bumping up to see how the kids are all doing with their overflow. connor is going through a bad phase just now - not actual pooing thank goodness but awful cramps again and spending loads of time in the loo. think i might increase the movicol and see if that helps. hope youre all doing better than us , kathx

I feel for all your children it is really not nice for them to go through..

My eldest ds who's 11 now shown signs of constipation from when i had to give a top up ff as he wasn't gaining weight then would get worse when being weaned.

By 6months he would have some bad nights and i would have to force his legs up to his belly to help him get it out.....

The docs put him on lactulose and was referred to the hospital,  and they x-rayed him which shown massive blockage so any poo's he was doing was just overflow (soft liquid poo that pushes past the bulk) from this he had nurses come out and give him enemas, and he was put on high doses of 10ml each of lactulosa and sennakot, all this went on till he was 3yrs old, and they took him in hospital to do i biopsy which came back clear on the 3rd biopsy it actually came back he had been born with Hierchsprungs disease i got a very big apology off his doctor that she never tested earlier for this.

After all the ops, he got better with time, but he still has marks in his pants and has to run to the toilet and still can have a smell around him.

hopefully the stomach cramps should go at least.  the problem im having at the moment is connor s stomach feels so much better he now forgets to take his movicol and we end up back at square 1. think im going to start giving it with his breakfast then i know hes had it.

I saw another gp today and got movicol to try for my daughter instead of the lactulose. Fingers crossed it will be a little better. Just wanted to say thanks for the advice to go back to the gp again. After they wouldn't change it the first time I asked I would have been reluctant to go back again without the support from on here, so thanks.

I didnt realise it was so common. My ds has just turned four and has been constipated since he was a baby, I think it started when he had Pyloric stenosis at four week old. My GP prescribed Lactulose (2.5 ml twice a day) and senokot (2.5 ml a day) As others have said though it doesn't really do anything except leave marks in his pants. I feel so sorry for him. I have never heard of the other medicine that has been metioned in this thread, but I think I will go back to the docs and ask about it
