I am not saying you shouldnt encourage it, just that there are a whole host of appropriate books in the young readers section at the library, some very traditional story books for beginners that i am sure will be of alot more use.  i know in our library they had the ugly duckling, goldilocks and the 3 bears etc etc all shortened to make them appropriate for that age.

I know my child was very into these types of books as I had read the longer verison of these books to her so the sense of achievement she got from reading it herself was huge.

As far as I'm aware the school my daughter will go to don't use these books, I don't think many do. She wants to read and asks everyday to read some books. It is not me pushing her and I'm not doing it so she will be on a higher level. I expect that she will start at the bottom books when she starts school as it will be different books and there are bound to be different words from what she has learned. I am only doing it because she wants to. I am only doing this reading scheme as my mum had the books from when my brother was little and she gave them to me.

why are you giving your daughter books that they use in school?  Do you know that the school she is going to attend uses this series of books as a resource?  If so then I dont think you should be using them at home really, the only reason I can see for giving your child these books is that you want her to be put on a level much higher than others.

Well i shall tell you something that does not necessarily happen.  My friend bought umpteen books of the ORT series before her kid went to school, she rushed her through them expecting that she would be put on a level from what she had finished at home, and she was shocked when she was put right back to the beginning because the child actually showed no real interest or expression in reading.

There are dozens of books out there that are not used in schools, I think youshould use a different type to be honest.

Thank you for your reply that is really useful to know so I have a guideline. My daughter loves reading these books and at the moment she is reading one story from them each day as she enjoys them so much, so we are going through them quite quickly.

    I have a questiongrasshoper

I am using the 'New Way' books to teach my daughter to read. She will be 4 in August and loves reading and is doing really well. She has read all the normal pink ones and is now 1/2 way through the pink platform ones. Just wondering if anyone uses these books and what colour reception children get to by the end of the year.
