I wouldnt worry. Some kids dont go to nursery/pre school and just start at reception. The 1st few wks will be finding out what your child can do. If there is anything they should no just tell them. eg needs wear glasses all the time, needs to be told to have a wee.

hi in the nursery i work in i am told to record anything that is deemed relevant eg how high they can count upto if it is on rote, group counting, counting objects etc, so it seems like every day you find something new to add to thiere personal file but it gets very disheartening when as you say the school transfer forms only ask for basic assesment of their abilities all we have to do is colour in each stage of learning they are up to in each stage with a small box to add comment but a friend of mine who works in aschool told me they don't tend to read the comments anyway and do there own assesments of each child when they start

My 4 year old has just finished nursery and they have been trying to recognise numbers 1 - 10, it is something they said to practice during the holidays along with writing her name correctly.  Maybe each nursery does differt things.

Hi Maxi i wouldn't be concerned at all my dd couldn't speak until just short of 3yrs and then when she did couldn't be understood properly until age 4yrs and has for your son counting up to 20 my dd has only just done that at the end of year 1 so i certainly wouldn't be concerned. I don't think you have anything to worry about at all he sounds above normal development if anything. Good luck. Sharon x

    Thanks for your replies!

I've never had anything from nursery about his development before - the record of transfer is the only thing they do.

Just seems a bit silly to fill out a form that doesn't give an accurate picture!!  I do know that his school screen all the children when they start reception so that they can help them with any problems/weaknesses.  Should be interesting as I'm concerned about his speech, he didn't start speaking English until he was 3.5yrs & although he has come on leaps & bounds I'm not sure whether he is where he should be.  I have asked nursery several times but they have told me he is & there are no probs.  We shall see!!!

I wouldnt worry about that, when my dd was at nursery, (last year) we got nothing like that which i found shocking.  We got her end of year report from reception and it only had under maths that she is very capable and can recognise and understand numbers to 10!!!!  I was a bit miffed to cos she can add, subtract, knows numbers into the thousands and recites 2, 3, 5, 10 times tables, but no none of that mattered, there wasnt enough room to write it all down!

As of September things will be changing, at present preschool/nursery have to work to one set of levels (birth to 3) then they have a different set upto end of reception.  Its all very confusing as many children can do more than is supposed to be recoreded but its not passed on with them.  From september that changes and the record and way of recording follows them right the way up to end of reception so there is more conitnuity and ability to record what they are actually doing.  You can get a copy of the new information by phoning Dfes or going on to their website to order a copy.  Im sorry off the top of my head i can not for the life of me remember what its called.  THey will know what your on about if you phone them. Foundation Stage, and Key Stage 1, as with all other stages, have set parameters as to what a child is expected to know by the end of the stage, and by each year.

In general, to most parents, to levels seem very low, however, the government has to work on an average scale.

At nursery level, there is a lot of input as to what can and cannot be taught, and they are trying to take the pressure off the children - but putting pressure on the staff to record everything anyway.

The nurserys do not have to record anything other than the minimum targets that the child has achieved, adn you will find this throughout their school life.  There is no point getting upset because they havent written that your can do do all the things he/she can do (dont take this comment personally, because I do know its upsetting that the reports are so basic they dont truly reflect our kids abilities).

When they start school, the children will start all over again with their abc, 1-2,3, and over time will work at the level according to their abilities.  the school will need to do base line assessments to see where every child is at in the classroom so they can gear their teaching at the right level.

look on like at www.dfes.gov.uk and look around, also search for foundation schools and see what you can find.

a lot more focus ( I believe) is on the social skills and interaction levels in the early years

We have one of these for our daughter. The nursery have ticked off all the things she can do. Some of them not meant to be able to do till the end of yrR. Some of the things I know she can do but they have to have seen them do them so many times at nursery before they can tick them off. If you are concerned have a talk to the yrR teacher. The teacher will soon see what your LO really can do.

Just wondered if anyone knows anything about these?  I can't find anything relevant online.

My son starts school in September (reception) & his nursery have given me a record of transfer which covers 6 areas of learning & development.  One of these is mathematical development & they have written that he recognises numbers 1-5 & that the next steps are to recognise numbers 1-9.  Now I find this odd as he can look at a clock & tell you the relevant numbers on there including double numbers (i.e 14 or 26), he also has magnetic numbers on the fridge & will put numbers 1 to 10 (uses a 1 & 0 for the 10) in order on there.  When I questioned it they said that it's because they only have to be able to recognise 1-5 at this stage so that is all they look for.  But even so, why put the next step as being recognising 1-9 when he already can.

What I want to know is that is it true that they only need to recognise numbers 1-5 at this stage??!!!!!

Any input is greatly appreciated as I'm totally confused!!
