ive not been able to establish what my son has been taught, they dont do the same leel of written work that the uk schools do.  I havent seen anything he has done that reflects any kind of recognition of these different types of words, and when I have asked him does he know what a noun, verb, etc is he says no.  but then, he says no to everything.

the only reason I was asking is because I have bought some workbooks for ds to work on at home, and they are covered on the curriculum. and I was a bit worrried that I am trying to introduce something too soon.  If the UK are covering these in y1/y2 there is no reason for me not to work on them, so thank you for your feedback

my son has just finished year 1 and he has been introduced to nouns, verbs and adjectives and can recognise them while reading a book.

Ds1 has just left year 2 and can recognise and name grammatical terms, he learnt the majority of it last year on his gifted and talented but it has been redone as part of his normal class work in year 2 this year.

He has brought homework home which tied in to this, i remember he had to analyse a passage from a tabloid and a passage from a broadsheet looking at the typical language used in both. I remember him learning pre and post modification, adverbs, adjectives, nouns, verbs etc with this topic.

DD1 has done nouns and verbs this last year. She has just finished primary 3 (Scotland).

Similarly, DD has just finished year 2 and can identify all parts of speech and tenses by name (including passive and present progressive tense which made me think!) They started last year in a less formal way and have gradually built on it. DS at 5 can find nouns in simple sentences, but that is all. He starts year 1 in September.

I suspect that it is an area that is visited every year in more depth. I remember having a big book of the old fashioned rules of grammar at that age. Don't know if it is still in print, but I might find the children know more than me quite soon and will have to take a refresher.!

i know that they are introduced to these words right through school, but in what year are the children actually told about "nouns", "verbs" "adverbs" conjunctions" etc?

i have bought lots of workbooks for ds, but they are australian workbooks and the years dont tie in with either uk or nz.  i have bought a year 3 book that mentions these various words, and whilst my son can answer the questions, he doesnt understand the descriptions given to describe the words (noun, verb etc)

    any guidance would be appreciated

    thanks heidih
