Hi,
I really hope someone can help me as I am sat in tears writing this! My dd is 8 weeks old, and I have had my ups and downs (mainly downs!) with feeding her, however I have a problem that has just got worse and worse. She keeps making a sucking/kissing noise (really loud) about 5 secs into a feed, and then constantly throughout the feed every 10secs or so. This would be ok, but every time she does, she slips and sucks just on the nipple and not the breast tissue, so I reposition and then it happens again! Because of this a feed takes ages and she gets really angry, as well as getting a sore tummy because she's taken in so much air.
I know for sure the latch on is correct as I had 2 bf consellors check it, and they really don't know why it's happening. they said she may have slight tongue tie but it is prob now too late to do anything about it as she won't change, so I should consider trying nipple shields or stopping all together.
As I thought her weight gain was fine I thought I would just bear with it, but having had her weighed today she has dropped considerably. She was a big weight at birth anyway - 10lbs 3oz, but has only put on 5lbs over last 2/3 weeks.
I'm so upset as just don't know what to do, I really hope someone is in/had a similar situation.
Sorry it's so long, thankyou, Terri xx

We were in the exact same position. Always had this problem from day 1, MW's just said he's a fussy boy! It got worse at around the same age as your lo, but I perservered by just putting him back on, sometimes trying rugby ball hold (although he never fed like this, it just confused him until I put him back round the right way again and then he would feed.) Other times I would just keep putting him down til he would eventually feed, letting him know that I'm here for when he decides to feed, but I wasnt mucking around with him. I almost gave up at one point but then my stubborness is too strong, I didnt go through 8 weeks of thrush to give up because he was fussy! And guess what, he is nothing like it now! He feeds very efficiently, gets to the job and no stopping til he needs to switch sides.
About the weight gain, I think you'll find that this is the case with nearly all breastfed babies. They gain so well then suddenly they start slowing down. My DS was gaining between 14 and 16oz a week, then one week he gained 2oz, the next none, then the following 8oz. It was all over the place, but funnily enough, he has followed the 75% line the whole time!
It doesnt sound like your lo isnt getting enough. If you want to breastfeed, keep perservering. I'm pretty sure you'll find you will see an improvement very soon!!
