My two and a half year old son is definately ready to be using the potty but for some reason he refuses point blank to sit on the potty/toilet and when I do manage to get him on there he doesnt do anything.
A couple of months ago he was doing so well and managed to go for quite a few wees and then all of a sudden wouldnt do it and we were advised to give it a rest for a while as he was getting so distressed. So now we've started up again, and we are back in the same situation.....he'll sit on the potty, not do anything, pull his pants up and two minutes later he'll be soaked through.............I just dont know what to do. I never had a problem with my dd1.
I know I shouldne let it bother me, but people keep questioning me as to why we arent potty training him, I just wish I knew what to do to help him not be so frightened.
We've tried rewards, ignoring accidents, going to the toilet together.....aarrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhh!!!

Hmmm - difficult one....i would probably tell people that you "are" potty training but in a gentle way. I would leave potty in living room and let DS play near for a while. Try and get Ds to sit next to the potty and have a teddy or doll on the potty and read a story about potties - we have the little princess "I want my potty". After that explain to Ds that he will get a reward (choc button or balloon or something he likes) for just sitting on the potty for a certain amount of time....say 1 min to start and use a timer that he can see. Increase the time/read books/watch tv and don't mention wees or poos at this stage. Hopefully, after a week or so he will be more comfortable with the potty as there has been no pressure to "perform" and then you can try the naked training - as above but with him naked waist down and if/when he does something in the potty - really make a fuss.
I am no expert but this is what i would do - hope it helps.
