In all fairness the guidelines used to be 3 months.. Then 4 and now 6.. So in years to come it will probably be 8 months. You cant feed a baby milk every hour as they just end up throwing it all back up... Some babies need solids before 6 months, thats a fact!29/8/08 16:40
Get a grip??! I have a very firm grip, thanx! :P Who said anything about judging?! I was just stating the facts that the government recommend waiting til 6 months! The only reason a baby would be "happy to eat" was if he'd already been given food before 6 months, surely? Giving babies food before 6 months can throw up all sorts of allergies and their little guts are too immature to cope with solid food at that age and they find it very hard to digest food. Could be why the baby is screaming?! Think about it! Also, some healthcare professionals are still very ill-informed about weaning. So many people i "know" have been advised to feed their babies purees (cue the many "my baby wont eat lumps" posts) or advised to start their babies on food from 12-16 weeks. Loads of people i "know" have also been advised to give their baby formula when they are happy breastfeeding etc etc. Sometimes these professionals are not as clued up as they should be.
I didn't mean to cause offence to the poster, but i do get very frustrated when i see so many people getting bad advice and then wondering why they are having problems later on.

Get a grip ARPargy. If you look at the guidelines the government regonises that some babies may need to start a earlier than 6 months, don't judge when someone has asked for advice! Aslong as you avoid meat/fish/gluten containing foods and stick to veg/fruit. For as much as you know advice could have been given by a healthcare professional for her to start weaning. Some babies just need something else and when you have tried hungry baby milk and still have a screaming baby who is happy to eat what would you do?????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

19 weeks??!!!!
At 19 weeks your baby should just be having MILK!! Babies should have milk as a sole source of nutrition up until they are 6 months old. Then you can start to introduce foods to them, either down the puree route or the baby led weaning route (obviously the choice is yours).
19 weeks is incredibly early to even think about giving solids to a baby and i think you'll find that HVs and GPs etc wont recommend it.

I would still keep it simple at nineteen weeks. Just things like fruit and baby rice, veg and potato mixed with babys usual milk. Rusk with fruit or veg. This is all I do at the moment, will start adding meat, fish, cheese etc at 6 mnths

If you decide to wean at anytime before 6 months, there are some foods that should be avoided as they may cause allergies or make your baby ill. These include wheat-based foods and other foods containing gluten (e.g bread, rusks and some breakfast cereals), eggs, fish, shellfish, nuts, seeds and soft and unpasteurised cheese. Ask your HV for advice, especilly if your baby was premature.
Solid food should never be introduced before 4 months
