astridthecrafty - Just wanted to say that i have used your great fish pie reciepe and not only is it cheap and healthy but my DS loves it and is sticky enough to stay on the spoon when he feeds himself!! - a massive thumbs up from us!!!

Thanks so much for your advice, I'll certainally give it a bash cooking in water or simply grilling. My ds has prescribed calcuim suppliments so he can't have any diary (or wholegrain, low sodium and low potassuim) due to kidney function. As this forum is so helpful no doubt I'll be back again after more advice in the future!
thanks again

fish is really easy...raw fish can be poached in water with a little lemon/salt/pepper any or all of them...salt obviously dependent on age.
just boil enough water to cover the fish in a pot, pop in the piece of fish and simmer for about 4 mins depending on the thickness of the fish...it should be totally opaque when fully cooked and the bits of flesh should flake easily
flat fish, like lemon sole which is expensive but very mild flavoured can be grilled easily, lie the fish on a baking tray, squirt over some lemon juice and a little water and grill till opaque
as for fish pie...what do you use as a milk subsitute for the vits/mins etc?...not even allowed soya is making it a bit more difficult to think of a sauce

My ds is not supposed to have dairy (including soya milk) - but he does like fish. I don't like fish so I don't know how to cook it much. Any ideas of making fish pie without diary??? (unfortunately all my lo gets is fish fingers or fish cakes)

annabel karmel does a similar recipe but also adds a hard boiled egg to the fish & grated cheese to the white sauce....yummy!!!

for a really easy fish pie you could use some tinned salmon or tuna, if thats what your LO has tried and liked...but make sure you use the oil variety to keep salt content low and rinse it well in a sieve under water to remove as much of the oil as you can
lightly flake the fish into an ovenproof dish (small ramikins for singular portions)
add some peas...maybe use sweetcorn with tuna
cover in some white sauce...either make your own from scratch, or cheat and use the powdered stuff you can get next to the gravy powder/granuals in most supermarkets for even easier, that way would also be easier to get a small amount...you wont need to add any salt with either of these because there will be plenty in the fish already
top with mashed potato...again make your own or use smash stuff
bake in oven about 180/200 degrees C till potato has browned slightly
you can add a little finely chopped parsley to the sauce before you add it if you want
if you want to use fresh fish, something like haddock etc, a good way to do it is to steam the fish or to poach it in milk then use that milk to make the white sauce

Hi, anyone have a simple recipe for fish pie? can u use tinned salmon or tuna?
txs in advance

ive got v easy way to make a yummy fish pie
in an oven dish, put either fresh or frozen fish in (i use cod, haddock, coley etc)
put in big nob of butter, and enough milk to cover bottom of dish
cover in foil and cook for bout 20ish mins - add peas, onions, leeks etc or whatever u like
make yr mash as normal
once fish is cooked though, i add cheese and spring onions to the mash and spoon/pipe over the fish and then brown in oven
because of the butter and milk, i dont make a sauce as this keeps it all really moist
