Please appeal. Afew years back when I was a single mum, tax credits were messing up everyones money, I was having to go to my local office to pick up a giro instead of it going into my bank.

When they sorted it out, I had £1500 go into my bank account. I called them straight away and told them I had been getting giros from my local office so its not my money.

They said that its all there on there screen and it is my money. I spoke to at least 3 people and they all said the same. So I went to lakeside and treated myself and my son.

About 6 months later they demanded it back, I was devastated, my mum said to appeal. So I sent them a letter explaining that I was assured I had done everything right. I got a letter back a couple of months later saying it was there mistake and I dont have to pay back a penny.

Dont let them worry you into paying it back, appeal and see what happens, it sounds to me like you have done it all right so fight it.

    Good Luck,

    Marie     xxx

Hi ladies, im new to all of this, why do you have to pay it back? Is it cos they kept on paying you the wrong amount after you told them DH had moved back?  Surely they cant say you have to pay it all back if you were a single parent for those few months? Hope you get it sorted! x

I had the same problem hun except i was single and moved my DP in i was told by JobCnter and income support that they informed Tax Credits so i didnt do anything untill i was told i need to tell TC so i called abouit 1 months later and had money stopped and made joint claim as DP wasnt working it was exact same amount as single just had Garys name on it.

Then i get a letter to pay back £435 back or summat along those lines i went loony they then told me it was benefit fraud i have since filed a complaint and have appealed the decision. Not heard anmthing back yet. But call them an appeal hun i would x

    I have a questionclaireduffill1985

me and my partner split just before xma so i changed everything to single parent, i do things like this straight away as it done then and i havent got to worry about it!! but a few months back me and my partner got back together and it was my partner who rang the tax credits to tell them that could we put it back to a joint claim, most the details were done over the phone but they sent a form for us to fill in and send straight back off which we did tthe same day it was sent out...

every thing was sorted untill i recived a letter saying i have to pay back the money i recived as a single parent as i was late sending back the application form but i did it over the phone and i feel i have no proof, a bit scared as its alot off money i have to pay back but i know i did everything right
