All colleges are different but usually from my own expereince and of others i know, you don't need any GCSE's to get onto the access but they may advise you to do the pre-access which involves doing english and maths at GCSE and 1 or 2 level 3 which is A Level subjects , this is so when you get onto your access you havent got double the work to do in a year . If you have english and maths gcse c and above you just start the access and when passed you gain and access pass which is equivilent to 2 a levels which will get you into university but check with universities on credits some ask for more than others!

Anyone need any other info message me xxx

Oh and by the way my offer has just changed on ucas to unconditional wooo!! xx

Hey girls just to add something on here most of the midwifery courses now are degree courses and you will need 3 a levels with a least one of them being a science based A Level hth....not sure about the access course though.

Mum to twins, you have done really well with your deliveries, my dd has had loads of either forceps/ventouse or c-secs and at one time thought she was jinxing everyone. Lol. She has had to go back to uni today tho as she is now working 7pm til 7am for 2 nights!! Not too sure how I would manage that. lol.

Lucy as Mum to twins said you don't need any qualifications to get on the access course but I had to do a 'test' in maths and english just to see what level I was at. Had my open night at the college last night and both my elder dd's came with me, I am now really getting nervous about doing it but my girls and dh keep telling me I will manage. I was also told last night that out of 25 girls doing the access course that finishes this year, 22 have got on midwifery courses at local uni's so that shows how highly most uni's consider access courses.

Lucy, the Access Courses usually last a year but some colleges also offer it part-time, over 2 years.

And yes, the qualification of an Access Course will get you into Uni to do a Degree. Because it's the equivalent of 2 GCSE's (usually maths and english), and 2 A-Levels (usually Human Biology and something like Psychology or Sociology).

I only had GCSE's, no A-Levels - which is why I had to do the Access Course. And it got me into Uni

Babybubbles - I agree with your daughter. If I had done Nursing, I also would have jacked it in by now. I've been doing my General Nursing placements lately, and I've really hated it. I have 26 deliveries now, and am dying to get back onto Labour Ward and do some Midwifery stuff again!

Hi girls, hope you don't mind me gatecrashing your post but the title just drew my interest. I am now an 'older' mum with a 14 month old daughter but had my other 2 dd's while I was young.

My eldest daughter is just about to start her 3rd year as a student midwife in Nottingham and says its really hard. She now has 21 deliverys and is back on labour suite in the next week or so as you need 40 deliveries to qualify. She enjoys the course but wishes she had got a place closer to home. She has also agreed with the other poster, there is no way you could do a part time job and the course due to the work load (she is only 20 and has no children.). Also she was offered a place to start in March 2007 but in August 2006 had a phone call advising a place had become available in September 2006 so we had about 3 weeks to get her ready to go. Just a warning to the girl who has been offered a place in March 2009

All of what she has told me has not put me off as I start an access to Nursing course in Sept, am doing it part time 2 nights a week as I have just gone back to work 30 hrs a week after my maternity leave, my daughters have really encouraged me to do what I am doing as it is something I have always wanted to do. My daughter jokes about her getting a job close to home and then being my mentor while I am training. lol.

Just wanted to say good luck to you all, hope everything goes well for you all and you get on the course you really want.

Oh and to the girl who has been offered a nursing course, stick to your guns and do what you want to do. My daughter was offered a nursing course at about 3 different uni's but she kept going to interviews and eventually got the unconditional offer from Nottingham. she also said if she had done nursing she would have given it up by now, she only spent 3 months on 'normal' wards and she hated it.

Take care all, will try and pop back on to see how everyone is getting on xxxxxxxxxxx

Dont think that was appropriate of you ree to post that comment on here but your entitled o your opinion.

To the new poster , do you have any a levels? or equivilent?  It would be useful to start getting some hospital experience whether its voluntary or paid , it will stand out on your personal statement. Please join www.studentmidwives.co.uk there is so much information on that website and lots of people up and down the country in all the different universities you can ask questions.

hope i dont put a dampner on things   ....but i want to get out of nursing!!!  with all the nhs cutbacks and new policies the 'patient' never seems to come first, the paperwork does!!  along with waiting times and targets.  Unsocial hours, under staffed, over worked  and midwifery is no different.  its hard work to achieve the qualification of a midwife and not all a bed of roses  once you have 'your dream'. if i had my time again i would chose i different occuapation with more sociable hours and greater appreciation by an employer, sometimes they forget we are mums too   ...but take no notice of me im just fed up with it all and wish i was starting a new career other than nursing..lol

good luck and hope you all suceed in your chosen paths xx

Hi everyone - haven't posted here for ages!

At the moment, I am doing my General Nursing placements. And it has definately confirmed to me that I do not want to be a Nurse! I am not enjoying it at all really, and am desperate to get back onto Labour Ward. Wont be back there until aaround October though

I am also trying (not very sucessfully) to write 4 essays - all of which are due in next month.

The true life of a Student Midwife, LOL!

HELLOOOOO everyone how are you doing? I am in my last week of my access course i cant believe it!! this year has flown by!!

Hey to all the newbies too, to the poster about access course costs , i had to pay £60 - £20 for registration and £40 for exam fees , people on income support benefits got it for free. BUT having spoken to many people on access courses across the country some people have had to pay over £1200 for their access which is crazy!! Defo ring your local college

To the poster re interviews, if your application gets sent off early your interview could be as early as Decemeber but all universitys work differently some people are still having interviews now! Its just a waiting game im afraid! And having a baby bump on show wont matter at all.

Hi girls. I hope you dont mind if i join you. Its always been my dream to be a midwife but at school i just didnt have the confidence in myself or my own abilities to persue it. I even had a weeks placement st the local maternity unit when i was for work expirience. But in the end up i cacelled it and went to do an office job instead. But now at the age of 23 with three children of my own i really feel ready and confident enough to finally go for it. Ive been looking into it and im in touch with someone at pailey uni. Ive applied for 2 different access courses and ive bought the myles, mayes and bailliers books. By the way i got all 3 from ebay for under £30 including postage. Ive had a quick read through and i wanted to say thanks to Emma for the information about the NSF and NICE. Ive copied the pdf's onto my computer so i can have a study through those. Thats about it really.
