how far are you into your nurse training ? if midwifery is what you really want to do , you could end your nursing degree when it comes to the end of whatever year you are at and then apply for your midwifery and get some experience in that field while you apply.
By finishing your nursing at the end of the year you still get a qualification instead of leaving with nothing

Has anyone signed up to SMS yet?

sorry to hear that hun.
How far have you got through your nursing course?
22/3/08 12:05
Tried that one... I can transfer to child or mental health nursing but not midwifery

22/3/08 02:48
Its a shame that they are stopping the conversion course. Not sure if you could but is it worth transfering to a midwifery course? Not sure if its possible though.
Good luck with your pregnancy

Hey everyone!
Sorry for crashing your thread! Im a student nurse at cardiff, always been interested in midwifery and was actually my first choice in course. However due to the competitiveness i was advised to do nursing first, then the conversion course for midwifery.
Am absolutly gutted to now see they are going to stop this in most unis
Really confused as to what to do because even though I enjoy nursing.. I want to be a midwife! Our course and bursary is exactly the same as the midwives (who often share alot of lectures with us) I receive a non-means tested bursary of £530 a month (not sure if students in england receive this) and we do blocks of theory and placement. This goes up if you have dependants and you also are entitled to a parental learning allowance if you are a single parent. Child care also costs very little if you use the uni creche (really not sure about other uni fundings- im in Cardiff)
At the moment im doing the common foundation programme, which has aspects of midwifery involved and I love it, really is a worthwhile career! Im 12 weeks preg now with my first and know that my experience will make me more determined to go into midwifery.. although not sure what to do now as they are stopping the conversion course and I dont want to be studying for 6 years!
We were recommended to read mayes and myles and also skills for midwifery!

Thanks hun your a star

Now you've got my cogs working ... what else is in this bundle lol?
17/3/08 22:33
Yes, BJM is a good one to use, but it CAN be quite complicated (I find it a bit 'heavy') - Practising Midwife (which you can get in WH Smiths if you don't want to subscribe to it) is a bit of an easier read

I decided when I was 18 that I wanted to study Midwifery. Applied oo start my Access Course that year, and then found out that I was pregnant and so I wasn't able to start. Although having my own children certainly clarified that Midwifery was what I wanted to do.
Well done MariePea - sounds like you're doing great! I think with all Access Courses, you can only get Level 2 Maths and English. For a Midwifery Degree, they only want Maths & English at GCSE Level anyway (which is Level 2), as opposed to A Level standard (Level 3)
I had to have my CRB Check done again when I started Uni - I'd already had one done a little while before, for something else. But they wanted a new one done when I was accepted into Uni - I guess so they can make sure you haven't got up to anything nuaghty in the meantime, lol!
With immunisations.... When you are accepted onto the course, in with all the bundle you are given, there is a medical form for you to fill in, and on it, it tells you the Immunisations you need.
I don't know if it's the same everywhere, but with my Uni - you could either get them done at your Doctors before your course starts (which is a good idea with the Hep B, because that is a course of 3 jabs over something like 6 months). Although your Doctor CAN charge you for them, and if they do, then you claim the money back through Occupational Health when you start Uni.
OR you can just wait until you start your course and can get them all done free through Occupational Health. But you have to be much more cautious on placement and stuff, until your Hep B course has been completed and you know that you're immune.

Kdw09 - I thought about it before I had LO I wanted to do something medical, so applied to study medicine but didnt get in, they want all A's at a level and I didnt quite manage that. When I was pregnant I asked my midwife about it but wasnt really thinking about my career as I was more focused on having my baby. I thought a lot more about it after I had Indi, applied in january but missed the deadline for applications and now I am counting down the months until I can reapply
Like you I really admired the work the midwives did before during and after Indi was born and wanted to learn to do the same.
Sounds like your doing great MariePea
Hope you are still enjoying it
Kdw09 - I was told by the midwifery admissions tutor at Nottingham Uni that its a good idea to read the british journal of midwifery. Mum2twins also said it would be good to read the NICE guidelines for midwifery which can be found at www.nice.org.uk/guidance
Charlotte - you'll have to have CRB checks to do midwifery anyway so might as well do them now while you look for work experience
although having said that they'll probably do them again when you apply to uni
How do you go about getting the extra immunisations you need to study midwifery and more importantly when do you get them? Also does it cost to have the extra imms? The only one I can think of that I need is hepatitis C as obviously thats not routine but do you need to have boosters of all the childhood imms?
17/3/08 18:21
thanks charlotte for the reply im nervous but cant wait to start, well done marie pea you seem to be doing really well all the hard work i suppose.
are there any books you would recommend to start reading?
ive never really knew what i wanted to do when at school but it just kind of clicked after ds was born that id really like help other people through thier labour and learn why they do things in a certain way, when i was preg i loved watchin birth diaries on living thought it was just a strange thing i was going through but obviously not

is midwifery always been something you wanted to do or like me you realised after having lo?
17/3/08 13:31
Well i've handed in 3 assignments now, have gained myself 3 level 3 credits from one of those, but won't have the other two back until after easter. And i had a maths test this morning, which i got 34/35 on
which got me 3 level 2 credits. Unfortunately can't get any higher than level 2 in maths

KDW09 - I have an interview for the access course at the end of april and i have to do an exam too, well there not exams just literacy an numeracy tests, to see if youd be capable of doing the course and whether youd struggle or not.
the course leader i spoke to said its nothing to worry about an tht it is very easy.
oh an about doin work experience when i rang my llocal hospital they said you have to go through police checks which can take a few months! but i know alot of ppl have shadowed midwives so so must not require police checks xxx
