The only route available then will be via a degree, hence why i couldnt defer my place for another year i hope that helps x

I know for definate that Nottingham University March is the last intake and the other universities are phasing it out to become degree only, after August 2008 this will be the same for everyone see this link http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/details/Default.aspx?Id=103

Hi tracey, if spoken to my tutor on the access course i'm taking, about the diploma. She said that she has heard nothing of the sort. She attends various different meetings at the Birmingham City university and they haven't mentioned it.
I can only assume that only certain universities are scrapping the dimloma at this point.

Hi girls just stumbles on this thread as i have a place on the midwofery course at Notts starting 10th March, i am really excited. I went to the open day and got to do a weeks voluntary woek which was ace, just to let you know the Diploma stops in this intake and as of Sept it will be Degree only just thought i should let you know x
28/2/08 14:21
Thanks for your reply, the open day sounds really good i'll ask at my local hospital.

Hi Jem
A friend of mine rang her local community MIdwife before she had her interview, and although she was busy, she did let her come out and shadow her for a day

I think that as shadower/volunteer, you could probably observe things like Antenatal Clinics, but I am not entirely sure if you would be able to go into the hospital environment and do the same. Simply because they're always so busy, and there are almost always Students there, and so they would get priority anyway unfortunately. It is worth ringing a local community midwife and asking if you can shadow her for a day, if that's the sort of thing you're after!
Also, my local hospital (where I now work on placements) holds a 'Midwifery Open Day' every year, for people who are interested in Midwifery to go and see what it's all about. See if any hospitals near you have something like that - it was really good when I went.
Hope everyone is well!

Hi, thanks for recommending that text zoe i think i'll get a copy and have a good look at it. also does anyone know the sort of things that you are allowed to view (& do) as a volunteer? I was thinking of asking our local midwife but she is only in our doctors surgery once a week and is always so busy (remember from being pg and my sis is expecting at the mo). Also my local college access course is the 'allied health professionals' this seems to be the only one for access to midwifery and nursing. has anyone done this course, if so any feedback on it?
thanks ladies

Nottingham have finally issued me an official letter and have basically asked me to apply for nursing
which they would take me this year for.I think I'd rather wait and apply on the 1/9/08 for midwifery tbh. I thought about a career in nursing but my heart is set on midwifery so I'll wait.
They seem to have a september 2009 intake and a march intake for 2010, not sure why though as I'm sure they are phasing out the diploma which used to start in march? Could they be running 2 staggered degree groups?
I had a look at the student monies available for midwifery and its all very confusing not sure which bits I'd be entitled to.
hope you get your head round it mariepea.
21/2/08 22:23
Hi Marie Pea, this is a link for the Bursary Calculator http://www.nhsstudentgrants.co.uk/ - in the green menu bars at the top of the page, on says 'Bursary Calculator'. Although I have to say, it's not all that accurate!

I have just finished my Intro To the 2nd Year week at Uni - things like the annual Resusciataton update, and from Monday I'm back out on placement. I'm on Maternity Daycare for 3 weeks, so wont get any more deliveries but should still be interesting.
HelenaSusan - We had a Medical student on the labour ward not too long ago, she was really good and they let her get involved in a lot of stuff. Hope you enjoy it!
21/2/08 21:43
A little off topic here girls sorry, is there anyway you can find out approximately how much bursary you are entitled to? Dp and I have been discussing our finances over the next few years, and it's something i'd quite like to know. With midwifery it's a means tested bursary isn't it? So is there like, a bursary calculator or something?
Thanks.

20/2/08 02:02
I wanted to do medicine but didnt have the required amount of A's an B's. How far are you into the course?
19/2/08 22:33
Hi all. I'm not doing midwifery but i am doing medicine so it is allied to it. I don't think there is anyone else on here who is doing it so I thought I'd gate crash your thread. Hope you don't mind.
I'm starting my Obs and gynae placement next week with 6 weeks placement in women's health and in antenatal clinic plus time on delivery suite. I'm really looking forward to it as it's something I'm really interested in.
19/2/08 21:37
You all seem to have disappeared...
How are you all?
17/2/08 18:46
I'll look into it
