I've replied asking if there is any chance they could treat my application as a deferred entry instead of me reapplying worth a try. Fingers crossed once again.

Absolutely gutted.
Just recieved this from the midwifery admissions team at Nottingham University.
Your email enquiry addressed to ******* has been passed to myself.
Unfortunately, I regret that we are unable to consider "late" UCAS
applications for midwifery training received after the closing date.
Applications will re-open in September 2008, when vacancies are expected
to be for September 2009/March 2110. Applications can be made online at
that time at www.ucas.ac.uk.I'm gutted but I'm going to reapply in september as soon as UCAS opens. Cant believe it as it was only 7 days late (bit more by the time they'd finished messing it up. What a waste of £5. Oh well though I had to try. Will just have to resubmit in september.
Good luck everyone and I'll keep talking to you all. You did all warn me not to get my hopes up though I should have listened.

Thanks for telling us your name Emma mum2twins is a bit of a handful to type. Congratulations on finishing your first year.
I'll look into getting skills for midwifery practise, looks good.
You could always go back to nursing Helen to the place where you finished

Hi
just thought id add my comment its not about midwifery but i started nursing at salford uni in sept 2006 i got £600 a month but it was £7 on the train a day as it was easier than driving!!
The money mostly went on chilcare for Katie who was 1 at the time when i started £88 a week for the chilminder. I was lucky though as i still live with my mum and dad and was supported financially and with help with Katie.
I quit uni about a month ago as some days i was not seeing Katie for more than 24 hours due to being on early/lates and 13 hour shifts! i loved the placements but i used to come home crying as i didnt want to rely on my mum and dad to pick Katie up get her in bed etc.
I think your all brave. Im not working monday-friday 8-4.30pm in H.R for a company and i love it
Good Luck

Thats great news that you got your first choice placement sounds fantastic

Mum2twins I agree with zoe, whats your real name lol?
What do you think to the book you've bought zoe,(or is it still in the post)
9/2/08 21:21

I thought it would be impossible because of the placements, glad you could shed some light on the matter
I'll probably go back to work in august build up some money for the first month of uni, then hand my notice in so I'm done in time for my first placement, its a shame because I love my 50% discount but it would just be too much. Ah well I'll be doing something much more rewarding hopefully
With regard to textbooks you can get them cheaper on amazon if you get them second hand
Both myles and mayes are expensive but you can shave a couple of pounds off on amazon, still not sure which one to get myself though.MariePea how are you finding your access course? Have you settled in now?
I've only applied to one university for the same reasons as you mum2twins, no point in applying else where because Nottingham are linked for midwifery with all the other close(ish) universities (derby, leicester, lincoln(although i think they only use lincoln hospital not the uni) so no point in trying to get a place miles away because I'm settled here

Have they given you a list of books and equipment to get yet zoe?

Congratulations on your Conditional Offer, Zoe - that’s great news! {c] Whe do you start, September?
Marie - your tutor is right. Midwifery IS one of the most competitve courses to get a place on. However, if you have the desire and the passion to do it, they will see that in you! You won’t know unless you try
I only applied for one Uni, because with the twins and eveything, I couldn’t really go anywhere else. And I somehow managed to get a place!Eloise.... Hmmm...
To be honest, I would say no. Before I started the course, I would have said it can probably be done. But now that I know how tough and demanding the course is, I don’t see that it can be. For a start, when you’re on placement, you will have to do weekend shifts - which would obviously clash with your weekend job. And even when you’re not on placements, you’l have 2/3 essays on the go, and will need the extra time to study. There is ONE person in my cohort who works - but she works from home as a beautician, and has clients in the evenings and at weekends. But she finds it really tough and is talking about giving it up. So if it’s hard to work from HOME and do the course, it must be even harder to work somewhere else and do it!Whoever asked about Mayes and Myles. My only advice would be to go to a library or a book shop, and look at both before you buy either of them. They are both very different styles, and I personally went for Myles because the style is a bit ’simpler’. It doesn’t use as much complicated terminology as Mayes does, it’s set out in easy to udnerstand sections, and it has more pictures
I preferred that style, and that’s why I went for that one. Having said that, I do take Mayes out of my Uni library sometimes to use for essays. Midwifery books are very expensive, so I actually don’t own that many - the library is much cheaper

Question for mum2twins... Would it be possible to slot an 8hour contract pt job around the midwifery course / placements? Or it that just unrealistic. My job is saturday and sunday (although I could say I dont want to work sundays, and have 8 hour shifts on a saturday instead) is that realistic or is it impossible to have part time work on a midwifery course?
6/2/08 03:16
Woohoo managed to get onto ucas track using an application number they sent me a junk email lol.
Says my application has been sent for consideration got butterflies just thinking about it my fingers and toes are now permanently crossed lol.6/2/08 03:09
I'd say medicine is more competitive to be honest Marie Pea, work hard and make your personal statement catch their attention and you'll be in for a fighting chance

Nice one Zoe

5/2/08 21:26
Yay, well done you.

I'm really worried about applying for a uni place. My tutor has told me that midwifery is the most competitive course to get onto. And that a girl who did the access course last year hasn't got into any of her choice uni's, even though she has done really well getting her credits and doing voluntry work etc.
I'm just worried i'm going to do all this work and be refused a place at the end of it

Lol dont worry thanks to Indi's somewhat erratic sleeping patterns of late, I have taken to going to bed between 5 and 7am!
Hopefully Nottingham is just the interview then! That remembering the essay buisiness sounds a bit much! Wouldnt mind writing an essay before hand but doing one on the day... eesh arent you nervous enough!
Let us know how you get on anyway

5/2/08 00:29

Hi everyone i've been interested in midwifery for a little while but as the kids are still young (3 of them aged 5,3 & 20 months) i feel a bit put off for now however i absolutly love reading and wondered if you could let me know a list of texts that are on the courses, or recommended, so as i could have a look at them and maybe see if i could cope with what there is to know! (library rental for now though LOL) i had a look at amazon but there are so many i thought someone maybe able to help! thanks in advance ladies
Good luck to you all on this course too i really do admire you all and hopefully i might be there one day
