I rushed the decision to do biomedical science, I wanted to do medicine but got turned away from uni's because I didnt have AAB grades so quickly chose another course without really thinking and that seemed like a good idea at the time when I had college teachers breathing down my neck to apply somewhere else. Then I got pregnant so I deferred the entry from sept 07 to sept 08 then whilst pregnant and since I've had Indi Mai I slowly came to realise that I couldnt see myself working in a lab for the rest of my life. Midwifery is much closer to my original aim of paediatrician or GP, only with midwifery you're not dealing with ill people *generally speaking* and you have the joy of bringing babies into the world. Having my baby was the main inspiration the midwives were amazing in the hospital where I delivered and it made me want to do it. I was going to decline my place with the biomedical science anyway. I only held onto it this long because I thought if I kept the place I'd be more likely to go to uni whereas if I had no place to decline I probably wouldnt have kicked myself into gear to apply for this cycle if you know what I mean? After medicine turned me away I did think of midwifery or nursing but I chose biomedical science instead no idea what made me do it and I wish I had just applied for midwifery in the first place lol.

how come you have changed to midwifery so soon ? xx
3/2/08 20:00

I couldnt believe NTU took that long to sort it its such a simple thing to do and they took forever doing it! Really glad i rang ucas back though or they would have happily taken my £5 and not sent my application off!
2/2/08 10:40
Blimey Eloise, glad you've got all that sorted out now!
What a nightmare!I am SO glad that I am coming up to my last week of placement, I am sooo tired!
1/2/08 16:43
that should have said "good job I did"
1/2/08 14:49
I've rang ucas again this morning and its a good job they did as they wouldnt have sent my application otherwise! They have finally recieved the information from NTU and now I have asked them to, my application will be sent to Nottingham University later today or monday
Bout time too!1/2/08 02:07
I am so annoyed girls. I got a letter with the ucas envelope and I thought "about time they've sent my track code" but no, it says
you have an unconditional offer at an institution which has been deferred from a previous cycle.
It has now come to our attention that you have submitted a second application for entry in 2008 which cannot be processed as only one application is acceptable in any application cycle. In the circumstances the second application has been cancelled.
If you wish to proceed with your 2008 entry application please contact customer services.
I am seething! I emailed NTU a week before I started writing my application for midwifery to decline my place. And they didnt bloody do it! So I rang ucas customer services and they said that trent hadnt told them I'd declined my place. I've only just realised after typing it out that they actually cancelled it! When I read it blurry eyed this morning I thought it just said they couldnt process it! Will have to ring them again tomorrow now! Anyway I then rang NTU admissions who passed me from pillar to post and still never got me in touch with the right person but nevertheless she was helpful and at least from the right school if not the right department! . I explained the situation and she said "well it says you've declined your place here" So i explained that the place was deferred and she said yes but its been declined. SO what the bloody hell are they playing at, or have ucas just not yet recieved the message?
I rang Notts uni up to explain that NTU and UCAS were holding my application up and the midwifery admissions lady was lovely and understanding and has made a note on my file so that its now inevitable lateness will not count against me.
The cheek of ucas though, didnt see them offering to refund the £5 lol (only kidding they are still going to process my application so of course I still have to pay for it, they are just going to do it when they hear from trent so I'm going to ring trent and ucas EVERY DAY until I'm convinced that they've done what they are meant to! Who would have thought they would be so adamant to keep me! I'm gutted though, means even more waiting. Wish they would just do as they are told, decline the place, tell ucas and let me get on with my life. Its just one thing after another!

sorry just saw this thread
Charz, for moving to america. Be careful, not every state recognises midwives and in some states i believe its actually illegal so i'd watch out trying to become one over there and read up on which states its allowed in or else you won't ever find a course let alone a job. Plus if you become a nurse first here you have to pass an enquiry by an international board to prove you are qualified to be a nurse in the US, each state has a different test so to speak to become a nurse so if you train in one state and move to another you have to get qualified to work in that state.

I love biology but struggled with meiosis and mitosis there are far too many similar words in there so I always got them mixed up. You wont feel overloaded for too long mariepea i'm sure its just while you are settling back into learning.
Thanks for sharing how you fund your childcare places. Indi will only be 10 months when I go to uni (if I get in of course) so obviously wont qualify for free places. I looked into the care to learn scheme but I dont think they offer funding for uni courses.
Keep in touch girls lovely to see how we are all getting on

Ooh zoe I tried your tip on ucas didnt work though so I'll just have to be patient waiting for the track log in details
Thanks for telling me though it was worth a try

Marie i bet you will find it hard to cut down to 800 words on why u want to be a midwife honestly!!
We started with meiosis and mitosis (spell?) this term think i just got my head round it !
I am just researching and essay i have to send off to edgehill uni on the role of the midwife and health education!

Hi zoe. The whole assignment is reproduction. But as we're doing it bit by bit, the first part is about meiosis and mitosis. It's not so much the concept that confuses me, more the big words lmao.
I have also been given a small english assignment today, and have to write 800 words on where i want my career to be in 5 years time. Doesn't sound that difficult as i know exaclty where i want to be by then, but how the hell do you come up with 800 words about wanting to be a midwife lol!
I'm really having a serious brain over load today, and think i need to get myself to bed!

Thankfully, my boys are 3 years old now and so they qualify for some free sessions at Nursery. It still costs me a bit, but not a lot.
They only started there this month though - before that, they went to a Childminder.
My Mum comes and stays with me, and looks after them for two days a week, and they go to Nursery two days a week.
I don't know much about what you can get while you're on an Access Course, as I can't remember - but on the Midwifery course, they take your Childcare costs into account with your Bursary. I get quite a lot of money of my Childcare paid for through my Bursary

Marie what is your assignment on ? Are you doing homeostasis? Good luck with it if it is homeostasis give me a shout! xxxx
30/1/08 22:01
heya eloise i get all my childcare payed for up to £160 per week , it is by an organisation called "care to learn" , i am not on any benefits and they don't take any income into consideration you just have to be under 20 and on a course over 12 hours a week !!
I can only get it till July

Hi! 3rd day in today and OMG!!!! I had a biology assignment handed to me yesterday and i'm struggling already lol. I think it's because my brain hasn't been used for a few years and is now being overloaded with info. I think tbh biology will be the only lesson i will really struggle with. But i'll get there in the end.
As for childcare, my oldest is in reception at school, and my youngest who's 3 goes to a pre-school. She has 5 sessions free, which i use wednesday afternoon, all day thursday and all day friday. And the college pay for her sessions on monday and tuesday and weds morning. So all i have to pay is for her lunches on her free days. So works out at 2.50 a week for me lol.
