I tend to use Medised if lo has a cold, as the anti-histamine helps to ease congestion (as well as making lo a bit drowsy so helping him to sleep). I bought some in Superdrug not that long ago and the lady didn't ask me anything about who it was for. I had ds with me at the time too. Of course, if you are asked, you can always fib and say it's for an older sibling. I think the main thing is to watch the doses of paracetamol / cough medicines that you give through the day if you're giving medised at night. It's exactly the same as Calpol Night ~ and both taste absolutely vile btw. LO much prefers normal calpol or baby neurofen.
The frozen muslin is a fantastic idea... I'll have to try it. Also, refrigerated celery sticks are great for relieving teething pain too.
hey ladies my ds goes hyper if i give him calpol so was told by a nurse try junior disprol 1/4 but pls double check with your gp this may not be ok for all, its only because my ds has a reaction that it was recomended?
Medised has a cough suppresent in too (an old anti-histamine) that makes LOs drowsy and it is that ingredient that they are worried about parents accidentally overdosing their LOs on. I've just checked ParaPaed and it has 3 E numbers in and one is an artificial sweetener so maybe the original variety rather than the sugar free will remove 1 e number. I always buy the sugar variety as the human body can break down sugar but not sweeteners, got the parapaed at A&E and hadn't actually read the ingredients. Was about to give some to DS, might go find the Calpol instead.........................
my DP has heard Medised is better, its only got 3 e-numbers compared to calpol. we asked at the Boots pharmacy about it and apparently they wont sell it to you if your child is under 2 years old. they are waiting for the new packaging to come through. who knows why, all the lady said was its got different ingredients than calpol - duh!!
DS also gos hyper on Calpol but seems OK on boots own brand stuff, I think it still has e numbers but they don't seem to affect him as much...
Am not surprised about Calpol, sure it's the same for the one on prescription from the docs? Luckily lo seems to have a really high pain barrier (always bumping head) but no teeth yet and only temperature once so not really tried them. Had New Era Infant Teething salts recommended to me, She certainly likes them, but not sure how great the pain relief is yet. Got them in Holland & Barrett.
darkpixie it's bloody awful isn't it, I try so hard not to give her any rubbish, but there really isn't any way around it. Poor baby is in so much pain she can't sleep, so I have to give her calpol, but I have to give it around 30 minutes before I want her to sleep coz it sends her absolutely loopy!!!
Oh and the best teether... Tie a knot in a muslin square, wet it and stick it in the freezer, when it's frozen solid let your LO chew it, much better than the gel ones you buy and you know exactly what's in it! I usually do about 3-4 in the morning, that lasts the day. She loves them!
I'm afraid I just have to give calpol and neurofen when ds is teething badly, as he has such a tough time with it and all the cold celery sticks and teething rings and teething powders and gels just don't do the trick like calpol does. I try and limit it just to the evening though, so he can get a better sleep. I know the E numbers are pretty hideous (the only e-numbers he every gets are from medicines, how crazy is that!), but if it stops him waking up screaming every hour then I really can't see any other option.
Do u know I never checked about e numbers
But I can say try a carrot in the fridge its hard and cold and great fro teething, and healthy too lol.
Is nurofen for kids any better? Not sure I have not tried that, I will come back back to you if I have any more ideas. xx
Im not sure of other pain relief when it comes to kids. the only ones we are allowed to ues for minor pain in young children in the hospital is ibruprofen and paracetamol anything strong you may need a perscription. Most kids medicines are full of e-numbers so unless you can find one which isnt then all i can really suggest is popping teething rings in the freezer to try and help relieve the pain.
OMG i just read on the Calpol that there are 5 different Enumbers in it! No wonder my DD has been going hyper on it. Does anyone know of anything else I can give her for teething pain she is 5 months and really suffering. I have tried Nelsons and Ashton and Parsons powders but they did nothing. Not getting a lot of sleep, please help!

I always use medised now for coughs, colds and fevers but not teething.
I got herbal tablets from health food shop (new era I think they were called).
They worked a treat and you can put them straight onto his tongue where they just melt or mix them in a drink. You are also not restricted to so many per hour or whatever just use them as you need them. They also worked on my 21 year old son who had toothache!
