My prefolds are being used for baby number 2 and I wash them every 3 days at 60 with a prewash first. The cases didn't last so well - the old rubbery ones - so not using them this time and those had to be washed at 40 and not tumble dried. The new ones are better and seem to survive at 60 ok, but most of my wraps are now naturebaby

I soak them for a couple of days and wash them at 30 or 40degrees. Then I line dry them.

You must have a faulty batch. They shouldn't rip after a couple of uses!

I wash mine once a week (I have quite alot as I work full-time and can't be doing with washing and drying them during the week).

The wet ones go straight in the (dry) bucket.  With the poo-ey ones I flush the solids down the loo and then give them a quick rinse under the tap.  They then go straight in the bucket as well.  I don't soak them at all.  At the end of the week I wash them at 60 (sometimes 80 if they are particularly disgusting and smelly - I know that isn't particularly eco-friendly, but it's the compromise for not washing them twice a week and not soaking them), and then dry them on the line.  If it is raining I dry them on racks in the house, but I prefer getting them out on the line, even if it is just for a little while in the depths of winter, so they get some fresh air and the sun can bleach out the stains.

    Hope that helps!
